Square Enix operating income jumps as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 14 drive growth

Square Enix has reported a significant rise in operating income for the quarter ending June 2026, citing strong sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and increased engagement in Final Fantasy 14 ahead of the Evercold expansion

Square Enix has posted a marked increase in operating income for the three months ending 30 June 2026, attributing the growth to the performance of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and heightened activity in Final Fantasy 14. The publisher's latest financial results indicate an 88.6% year-on-year jump in operating income for the quarter, a figure that stands out even in a competitive release window.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's Expanded Launch

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's staggered release across platforms has played a central role in Square Enix's recent financial momentum. The game launched on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S in June, following its earlier PlayStation 5 debut. According to the company's report, the RPG delivered a "solid performance" during the quarter, with sales boosted by its arrival on new hardware. The Adventures of Eliot: The Millennium Tales was also mentioned as a contributor, but Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth remains the headline act in this period.

Final Fantasy 14 and the Evercold Expansion

Alongside its single-player output, Square Enix has seen a surge in user activity within Final Fantasy 14 as anticipation builds for the upcoming Evercold expansion. The company notes "improved user activity" in the MMORPG, with many players returning or increasing their engagement ahead of the new content. This uptick is attributed to "advance recognition" of the expansion, suggesting that the player base is preparing for the next major chapter in Eorzea's ongoing story. Notably, the active player count for Final Fantasy 14 reportedly surpassed one million for the first time since early 2025, underlining the scale of renewed interest.

Financial Impact and Franchise Outlook

The 88.6% increase in operating income reflects both the commercial strength of Square Enix's flagship RPGs and the effectiveness of its multi-platform release strategy. While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's expanded availability has driven sales, the live-service model of Final Fantasy 14 continues to deliver consistent engagement and revenue. Looking ahead, the publisher has signalled further major releases, including Final Fantasy 7 Revelation in 2027, which could sustain or even accelerate this growth if current trends continue.

Operating income is a key financial metric that measures a company's profit from its core business activities, excluding taxes and interest. In the context of gaming, a sharp rise in operating income often signals successful game launches, strong player retention, or effective expansion strategies. For live-service titles like Final Fantasy 14, ongoing engagement and anticipation for new content can have a direct and measurable impact on a publisher's financial health, especially when combined with high-profile releases across multiple platforms.
