Jason Schreier's report traces GTA VI's long road to Rockstar's focus on Red Dead Redemption 2 and an unsettled early vision. The pandemic added disruption, though its effect on the schedule remains unclear.
When GTA VI is scheduled to launch on 19 November 2026, 4,811 days will have passed since GTA V first arrived. That gap is longer than the 4,348 days between GTA III and GTA V. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier's report describes years of groundwork before full production: Rockstar began researching the project around 2015 under the working title Project Americas, including a trip to Miami.
Rockstar initially hoped to develop GTA VI alongside Red Dead Redemption 2. As the western grew, the studio struggled to split staff between the two games and shifted most of its workforce to finishing Red Dead Redemption 2. It came out in October 2018, freeing up more resources for GTA VI. Schreier's account points to several pressures behind the long wait, rather than one sudden delay.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Took Priority
The plan to work on both games at roughly the same time fell apart. Red Dead Redemption 2's scale made it difficult to divide staff, so Rockstar concentrated its manpower on that project. Full production on GTA VI did not really begin until 2019, after an earlier period of research and concept work.
That choice gave Rockstar room to finish Red Dead Redemption 2 before moving into full production on the next Grand Theft Auto. The report's timeline makes the trade-off clear: the studio focused on the western first, leaving GTA VI to start later than fans might have expected. Both games are described as having development cycles of around eight years, though GTA VI's early research began before its main production phase.
An Unsettled Early Vision
Even after full development got under way, the game's direction reportedly remained unclear for its first three or four years. Schreier links some of that uncertainty to an unusual arrangement: three developers shared the Head of Development title. Rob Nelson and Aaron Garbut were among them. Phil Hooker held the same role.
Staff reportedly saw that structure as a source of indecision. One open question was how much of Red Dead Redemption 2's realism should carry over to Grand Theft Auto. The choice affects the game's pace and tone, which have traditionally differed from the slower, more grounded approach of Rockstar's western.
Project Americas began with a much larger map in mind, potentially spanning parts of North and South America. Rockstar later narrowed the scope to Vice City and surrounding regions. By the end of 2019, the story framework featuring Jason and Lucia was in place, while many gameplay and design decisions remained open. A more cohesive vision emerged around 2022. Rockstar released the first trailer a year later, a public reveal that did not mean every development question had been settled.
GTA VI's early development also overlapped with the COVID pandemic. Schreier's report says the disruption made work harder, but does not establish how much time it added to the schedule.
Detail and Crunch
Schreier also points to the game's fine-grained simulation as one reason production has taken so long. Rockstar described a system that calculates how much Jason or Lucia sweats according to their physical activity. The system also applies to non-player characters. Dance harder in a nightclub and the character sweats more. It is a small example of the detail Rockstar is building into the game, not a measure of how much content players will get.
Rockstar wanted to avoid repeating the heavy crunch associated with Red Dead Redemption 2's launch. The studio tightened scheduling and grew its workforce from 2,441 employees in 2018 to 4,711 in August 2026. Rockstar says tools developed during GTA VI's production should help speed up future projects. That remains the studio's claim, not a demonstrated result.
Release estimates need careful handling. NGB's Zelda PC report likewise distinguished a creator's estimate from a confirmed launch date.
Release Plans and Rumours
Rockstar has scheduled GTA VI for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. The company initially targeted 2025, then announced May 2026 before moving the release to November. A PC version arriving in early 2027 remains a rumour, not a confirmed plan. Rockstar has not confirmed a PC date.
That leaves the console release date and platforms as the confirmed details. Schreier's report explains how Rockstar reached this point, but does not settle PC timing or quantify how much the pandemic and efforts to curb crunch affected the schedule.
Crunch refers to unusually intense work during game development, often with extended hours as a project approaches a milestone. Rockstar tightened its scheduling to avoid a repeat of the pressure associated with Red Dead Redemption 2. The report does not detail how those changes affected individual teams.
