Wartales Community Update 7 overhauls crime and prisoner systems on PC

Wartales receives its largest free update yet on PC as Community Update 7 introduces a new criminal hub and expanded prisoner mechanics while Xbox players get access to the new expansion The Curse of Rigel

Wartales has delivered its most substantial free update to date, transforming the way players approach criminal activity and prisoner management on PC. Community Update 7, now live, introduces "The Lair"-a dedicated hideout for mercenary bands who have crossed the line into outlaw territory. This new hub is not just a cosmetic addition; it fundamentally changes how players interact with the game's crime and chaos systems, offering new ways to profit from illegal actions and manage the consequences of a rising suspicion level.

The Lair and criminal playstyles

Players who accumulate enough suspicion through theft and robbery can now discover The Lair's location via informants. Once established in this hideout, warbands gain access to fencing stolen goods, accepting criminal bounties, purchasing exclusive weapons, and actively reducing their notoriety. The Lair is designed to support a full criminal playthrough, giving players more agency and risk-reward decisions than previous versions of Wartales allowed.

This update also brings three new armour sets, available for purchase or theft from wandering merchants, and six additional battle maps spread across Alazar, Harag, Gosenberg and Edoran. These additions expand both the tactical and narrative options for players who want to push the boundaries of lawful conduct in the game's medieval sandbox.

Prisoner system reworked

Community Update 7 does not stop at criminal mechanics. The prisoner system has been rebuilt, introducing a dedicated skill tree for captives and new needs and desires based on individual traits. Warchiefs now have more direct control over prisoners, both in camp and during combat, while prisoners themselves can develop hidden objectives that influence their trust and behaviour. This overhaul aims to make prisoner management a more strategic and unpredictable element of the campaign.

Personal mercenary quests have also been added, giving individual characters unique objectives and rewards. Character sheets have been redesigned for clarity, splitting information across three tabs to improve usability. A new "End Round" button allows players to skip the turns of all remaining units, with the option to cancel if needed-a direct response to player feedback on pacing and control.

Expansion The Curse of Rigel on Xbox

While PC players receive the free update, Xbox users now have access to Wartales - Expansion: The Curse of Rigel. This expansion transports warbands to the Sylve Forest in County Rigel, a region shrouded in perpetual darkness. The campaign tasks players with investigating a series of brutal murders and surviving against corrupted wildlife, all while managing dwindling light and the party's sanity. The expansion is available via the Xbox Store, broadening the game's reach and content offering on console.

Wartales' base game is currently discounted by 72% on Steam as part of a Midweek sale, with all DLC up to 35% off. The update and expansion follow a pattern seen in other tactical and action games, such as those reported earlier, where major content drops are used to reinvigorate player interest and extend a game's lifecycle.

What remains and developer context

Community Update 7 is available now as a free download for all PC players. Shiro Games, the Bordeaux-based studio behind Wartales, has a track record of supporting its titles with significant post-launch content, as seen with Northgard and Dune: Spice Wars. Wartales itself has received several major DLCs since its April 2023 release, and the current update is positioned as a direct response to community feedback, focusing on systems that players have found lacking or underdeveloped.

Despite the scale of the update, there is no indication of a new paid expansion for PC at this time. The Curse of Rigel remains exclusive to Xbox for now, and Shiro Games has not detailed future plans for cross-platform content parity. Players interested in the latest features should check the official Wartales website or join the game's Discord for ongoing updates and patch notes.

Quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes round out the update, but as with any major patch, the long-term impact on balance and player experience will only become clear after extended play. The studio's willingness to overhaul core systems suggests a commitment to evolving Wartales beyond its original scope, but it also raises expectations for future support and parity across platforms. For now, Community Update 7 stands as a rare example of a live-service patch that meaningfully reshapes both the tactical and narrative layers of a single-player RPG.

Understanding how live-service updates like Community Update 7 affect a game requires recognising the difference between content expansions and systemic overhauls. While expansions typically add new areas, quests or storylines, a systemic update changes the underlying mechanics-altering how players interact with the world, characters and progression. These changes can have a more profound effect on replayability and player engagement than new content alone, especially when they address long-standing community concerns. In Wartales' case, the overhaul of crime and prisoner systems is likely to influence not just new campaigns but also the way returning players approach the game's core challenges.
