Xbox Console Update Brings Party Chat Capture and Achievement Sorting

Xbox has begun rolling out a new console update, introducing party chat audio capture, expanded achievement tracking, cloud save restoration and a larger wishlist limit for players on Xbox Series X and S

Xbox has started distributing a fresh console update to selected users, introducing several new features aimed at improving gameplay capture, achievement management and save data flexibility. The update is initially available to Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring, with a broader rollout planned for the coming weeks.

Party Chat Audio in Captures

The most notable addition is the option to include party chat audio in gameplay captures. This feature allows players to record not only in-game action but also the real-time reactions and conversations of their party. Importantly, each party member must manually opt in before their audio is included, ensuring privacy and consent are maintained. The update is designed to give players more control over how they document and share memorable gaming moments.

Expanded Achievement Tracking

Achievement tracking has also received a significant overhaul. Players can now sort their achievement lists by categories such as Last Played, Completion Percentage, Gamerscore Earned and Number of Achievements Unlocked. Each category can be viewed in ascending or descending order, making it easier to identify games close to full completion or to prioritise new achievement hunts. This change is likely to be welcomed by dedicated achievement hunters seeking more granular progress tracking.

Cloud Save Restoration and Wishlist Expansion

Another practical improvement is the ability to view and restore previous versions of cloud saves in supported games, starting with Forza Horizon 6. This feature is intended to help players recover from corrupted saves or revisit earlier points in their progress. Additionally, the maximum number of games that can be added to a wishlist has been increased to 1,000, offering greater flexibility for those tracking upcoming releases or sales.

Context and Recent Platform Changes

This update arrives shortly after Microsoft implemented price increases for certain Xbox Series X and S models in the US and UK, with some units rising by up to $150 or £220. The timing of these feature additions follows a period of heightened attention to Xbox hardware pricing, as previously discussed in our coverage of Xbox Series X and S price changes across Europe and the UK. The new update is part of Xbox's ongoing effort to refine the user experience and respond to evolving player expectations.

Cloud saves are a form of online storage that allows players to back up and synchronise their game progress across multiple consoles. When a game supports cloud saves, progress is automatically uploaded to Xbox's servers, reducing the risk of data loss due to hardware failure or accidental deletion. The new ability to restore previous save versions gives players more control over their data, particularly in cases of corruption or unwanted progress, and reflects a broader industry trend towards flexible, player-managed save systems.
