Xbox has clarified that not all single-player games from its studios will be exclusive to Xbox consoles, with future exclusivity decisions to be made individually rather than by genre or mode
Xbox has moved to clarify its approach to exclusivity following recent announcements and ongoing speculation about which upcoming games will be locked to its platforms. After a period of releasing previously exclusive titles on rival systems, Xbox has now confirmed that some major new games will return to being console exclusives, but the company has stopped short of making a blanket rule for all single-player releases.
Exclusivity decisions after the Xbox Games Showcase
Following the latest Xbox Games Showcase, Xbox's Chief Commercial Officer Matt Booty addressed the uncertainty around which games will be exclusive to Xbox Series X|S and PC. While Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are both set to launch as Xbox console and PC exclusives, Booty emphasised that not every single-player game from Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, or Activision Blizzard will follow the same path. Instead, exclusivity will be determined on a case-by-case basis, with no fixed rule based on whether a game is single-player or multiplayer.
This clarification comes as Xbox prepares to release Minecraft Dungeons 2 and Grounded 2 on other platforms later this year, despite both being developed by Xbox-owned studios. The company has also indicated that large live-service titles will continue to launch across multiple platforms, maintaining a broad player base for ongoing multiplayer experiences.
Live-service and multiplayer titles remain multiplatform
Xbox has confirmed that its major live-service and multiplayer games will continue to be available on rival consoles. This means that future entries in franchises such as Call of Duty are expected to remain accessible to PlayStation and other platforms, rather than being restricted to Xbox hardware. The company's strategy is to maximise reach for games that depend on large, active communities, while reserving the option to make certain single-player or narrative-driven titles exclusive where it fits the broader portfolio.
For upcoming single-player projects like Hideo Kojima's OD and The Elder Scrolls 6, platform availability has not yet been finalised. Xbox's current policy is to avoid announcing platforms for new games until closer to their release, leaving players to wait for confirmation as development progresses.
What remains uncertain for players
At present, Xbox has not published a definitive list of which future single-player games will be exclusive to its platforms. The company's leadership has acknowledged that this approach may be confusing for some players, but has committed to providing clearer information as individual games approach launch. Until then, players should expect that live-service and multiplayer titles will remain multiplatform, while single-player exclusivity will be decided individually.
Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled to launch exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PC later this year, with Clockwork Revolution following in 2027. Minecraft Dungeons 2 and Grounded 2 are both confirmed for release on additional platforms in 2026. No further exclusivity details have been announced for other major projects at this stage.
Exclusivity in gaming refers to whether a title is available only on a specific platform or across multiple systems. Platform exclusives can be used to drive hardware sales or differentiate a console's library, but may also limit access for players on other systems. Xbox's case-by-case approach means that players will need to pay close attention to official announcements for each game, as there is no longer a simple rule based on genre or mode. This evolving strategy reflects the changing priorities of platform holders as they balance ecosystem growth with the desire to attract players to their own hardware.
