SEED Early Access Launches: Build Persistent Societies on a New Planet

Klang has launched SEED in Early Access, offering a persistent MMO simulation where players create autonomous Seedlings and shape societies on a newly colonised world, with systems inspired by RimWorld and The Sims

SEED, the latest project from developer Klang, has entered Early Access, inviting players to establish and manage autonomous societies on a freshly colonised planet. The game positions itself as a persistent, player-driven MMO simulation, blending elements from RimWorld and The Sims to create a world where player-created characters-known as Seedlings-continue their routines and contribute to society even when their creators are offline.

Persistent Societies and Player Autonomy

At the heart of SEED is the concept of persistent, evolving societies. Players are tasked with building and customising Seedlings, each with distinct personalities and behaviours. These Seedlings operate independently, gathering resources, constructing buildings, and interacting with others to form functioning communities. The simulation continues in real time, meaning that societies develop and change regardless of whether individual players are logged in. This approach aims to create a living world that mirrors the complexity of real-life social structures, but transplanted to an alien environment.

Players can choose to join one of thousands of emerging societies or strike out independently, guiding their Seedlings to gather materials and construct everything from basic bedrooms to factories, pubs, and hospitals. The game's design encourages collaboration and competition, with societies coexisting in a single shared world. This persistent structure opens the door to political intrigue, economic competition, and shifting alliances as the game evolves.

Gameplay Systems and Social Dynamics

SEED's gameplay draws heavily from established life and management simulations, but introduces MMO-scale social systems. Players influence their societies' governance, with options ranging from top-down aristocracies to grassroots democracies. Leadership roles, lawmaking, taxation, and trading between communities are all player-driven, allowing for a wide variety of political and economic experiments. The game also features a working real estate market and regular political elections, further deepening the simulation's complexity.

Communication with Seedlings is not limited to in-game sessions. Players can check in and interact with their characters via their real-world phones, maintaining a connection to their societies even when away from their PCs. This feature is designed to keep players engaged with the ongoing development of their communities and to facilitate decision-making on the go.

Early Access Availability and Platform Plans

SEED is currently available exclusively through Klang's standalone launcher, with a Steam release planned for later in the year. The Early Access phase is intended to gather feedback from players as the simulation's systems are refined and expanded. Klang has emphasised that the success of SEED's persistent societies depends on active player participation, encouraging early adopters to help shape the world's development.

While SEED's approach to persistent online simulation is ambitious, it follows a broader trend of games experimenting with player-driven worlds and emergent social systems. For context, other titles have explored unique approaches to open-world design and player agency, such as the inventive mechanics seen in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS, which set itself apart within its franchise through distinct gameplay innovations.

At launch, SEED is only accessible via the official website, with no confirmed date for the Steam version. Klang has not yet detailed pricing, monetisation, or long-term content plans, and there is currently no information on console releases or cross-platform support. The game's Early Access status means that features and systems are subject to change as development continues.

Early Access is a release model where a game is made available to the public before its full commercial launch, often in an unfinished or evolving state. Players who join during this phase can experience new features as they are added, provide feedback, and help identify bugs or balance issues. However, Early Access titles may lack polish, stability, or complete content, and there is no guarantee that all planned features will be delivered. For SEED, this means that while the core simulation is playable, the final scope and quality of the game will depend on ongoing development and community involvement.
