RuneScape: Dragonwilds Launches Day One on Xbox Game Pass and More

Jagex has confirmed RuneScape: Dragonwilds will launch on Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium, and multiple platforms this September, marking the franchise's first standalone console release

Jagex has officially announced that RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the first standalone console entry in the long-running RuneScape franchise, will launch as a day one title on Xbox Game Pass next month. The game is set to arrive on 15 September 2026, bringing the series' open-world, co-op, crafting and survival gameplay to consoles for the first time. This marks a significant expansion for the franchise, which has previously been limited to PC and mobile platforms.

Confirmed Platforms and Editions

RuneScape: Dragonwilds will be available on Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 5, PC (via Steam, Jagex Launcher, and Epic Games Store), and Nintendo Switch 2. The game will also be included in PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers from launch, offering subscription access for PlayStation players. Both Digital Standard and Deluxe Editions will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S on 15 September. A Digital Standard Edition is also planned for Nintendo Switch 2 on the same date, while physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are scheduled for Q4 2026.

Jagex reports that RuneScape: Dragonwilds has already sold over 1 million copies during its early access period, indicating strong interest ahead of its full release. The 1.0 launch will include the new Scorned Wilderness update and all content from the upcoming Umbral Sands expansion, consolidating both new and previously announced features into the release build.

Gameplay and Setting Details

Set in the unexplored continent of Ashenfall within the RuneScape universe, Dragonwilds offers solo and four-player co-op play. Players will explore a fractured land affected by untamed, transformative magic, with a focus on levelling skills, crafting gear, and preparing potions to survive encounters with fierce dragons. The game's design emphasises both combat and practical use of magic, with players able to collect spells, gather resources, and craft items to support their journey towards the Dragon Queen.

While the core gameplay loop centres on exploration, survival, and progression, Jagex has not yet detailed the full extent of endgame content or live-service plans. The inclusion of the Scorned Wilderness update and Umbral Sands expansion at launch suggests a substantial content offering, but the long-term roadmap remains unconfirmed.

Subscription Access and Release Timing

RuneScape: Dragonwilds will be accessible to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on day one, joining the September line-up alongside other titles such as Shelldiver. PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers will also receive access at launch, reflecting a cross-platform approach to subscription availability. The simultaneous release across Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 ensures broad access, though physical editions will arrive later in the year for selected consoles.

Microsoft has not yet published the full list of September Game Pass additions beyond Shelldiver and Dragonwilds, so further platform-specific details may emerge closer to launch. No information has been provided regarding cross-play, cross-progression, or specific technical performance targets for each platform at this stage.

What Remains Unclear

While the release date, platforms, and included content are now confirmed, several details remain unaddressed. Jagex has not specified whether RuneScape: Dragonwilds will support cross-play or cross-progression between platforms, nor has it outlined the technical performance targets such as resolution or frame rate for each version. Pricing for the Digital Standard and Deluxe Editions has not been disclosed, and it is unclear whether any pre-order bonuses or early access incentives will be offered for the 1.0 launch.

Additionally, the extent of live-service support, future expansions, and monetisation beyond the initial release has not been detailed. Players interested in physical editions will need to wait until Q4 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions, with no mention of a physical release for Nintendo Switch 2 or PC.

When a game launches simultaneously on multiple platforms and subscription services, the technical and content parity between versions becomes a key concern for players. Platform holders often require certification to ensure stability and performance, but differences in hardware and online infrastructure can still affect the experience. Until Jagex provides further technical details or independent testing becomes available, players should be aware that performance and feature support may vary across platforms at launch.
