S-Game says a wooden sword can carry players through Phantom Blade Zero. The 30-weapon system, shifting difficulty and October 29, 2026 launch point to a broader action RPG.
Players will be able to take a childhood wooden sword into every fight in Phantom Blade Zero, at least in theory.
Mastery Over Equipment
Director Soulframe Liang says the weapon can carry a player through the entire game. That turns a basic training tool into a direct test of the studio's kung fu philosophy.
S-Game has created 30 weapons with differences in movement and range, while each weapon also brings its own mechanics. Players can keep one weapon from the opening fight to the final encounter or switch between combat styles as they go. Other published materials describe an arsenal exceeding 30 weapons, alongside more than 20 special Phantom Edges combat techniques. Because the game is single-player rather than competitive, S-Game has room to build unusual tools without forcing every weapon into strict PvP balance.
The drunken blades show how far that design goes. They make the character drunk while swords start flying through the air. Greater intoxication increases their power.
Other weapons answer specific combat problems. An axe can break enemy shields, although Liang says players will still find alternative solutions.
The aim is to put different keys in front of different locks. New mechanics should make players rethink familiar encounters and keep the campaign moving without turning the weapon system into a mandatory checklist.
A Hybrid Combat RPG
Phantom Blade Zero is being built on an RPG foundation with side quests and a guided map. Exploration will rely on clues. Its level design draws from Souls games, while boss encounters use the speed and combo focus associated with hack-and-slash titles.
Polygon reports that the project continues S-Game's Rainblood/Phantom Blade series. It is positioned as an action RPG built around rapid combinations, parries and cinematic finishers.
The structure moves away from a conventional Soulslike format. The map will avoid a wall of icons, while hidden secrets and side quests are meant to reward attention rather than routine checklist clearing. Liang has described the result as closer to an adventure game with several genres compressed into one campaign.
Difficulty changes more than enemy statistics.
Higher settings will also alter artificial intelligence and behaviour trees. On Hellwalker difficulty, the Flower Bride becomes more aggressive, and her white flower attack can split into three threats arriving from different directions.
Another mode, 66 Days, limits players to 66 retries. New Game Plus will not lock separate story content behind a tougher playthrough, though late-game weapons can gain practical value when carried into an earlier run. An experienced player is expected to finish the main campaign in roughly 25 to 30 hours without getting stuck on bosses.
The 66-day limit also shapes the story. Soul, the protagonist, is an elite assassin accused of killing his mentor. After an almost fatal injury, he has only 66 days left to live.
From Wuxia To Kung Fu Punk
Liang's cultural target is specific. Phantom Blade Zero uses Chinese landscapes and weapons while drawing on wuxia traditions. Its emotional core rests on revenge, friendship, love and hatred, giving the story a familiar revenge-thriller frame for audiences outside China.
The team calls the wider style Kung Fu Punk. It combines wuxia with kung fu, steampunk machinery and manga and anime influences. Ideas associated with Bruce Lee also shape the project. Hollowed faces, machine towers, bells and red strings are meant to form one fantasy system without leaning on familiar imagery such as dragons or skeletons.
That blend drives the cinematic combat. S-Game studies classic martial-arts films and traditional kung fu schools, then breaks continuous film movement into playable segments. Designers control pauses and transitions so players retain agency while attacks still land with the rhythm of a choreographed fight. According to Polygon's coverage, the studio has linked the system to authentic Chinese martial arts and worked with fight choreographers whose experience includes classic wuxia cinema.
Published materials also credit Donnie Yen as a creative consultant and as the motion-capture performer for Mo Yuan. His work connects the game's animation to the physical language of martial-arts performance.
Scale And Platform Plans
Phantom Blade Zero is S-Game's first large-scale three-dimensional AAA project built with Unreal Engine 5. The studio previously focused on mobile games. Liang says the company has developed the underlying IP and world for more than 20 years, but the production scale required new expertise from the ground up.
S-Game has recruited young developers and indie creators for major tasks. It is also relying on Chinese production companies with long experience in animation and 3D modelling, as well as concept art. Liang describes the project as large in scale and budget but independent in spirit because inexperienced developers have been given room to attempt ambitious work.
The release is scheduled for October 29, 2026, on PC and PlayStation 5. The PC version is expected through Steam and the Epic Games Store. PlayStation 5 Pro enhancements are planned to include better lighting and ray tracing, alongside higher-quality character and landscape modelling. Those are announcements about the intended version, not independent performance measurements. Detailed technical information has not yet been provided.
Phantom Blade Zero received a dedicated State of Play presentation with almost 20 minutes of gameplay. A later extended 11-minute video showed the opening scene, combat and boss encounters, giving viewers a broader look beyond isolated demonstrations.
At the time of the available updates, S-Game had not officially confirmed a separate downloadable demo for PS5 or PC. Demonstration builds had appeared at gaming exhibitions.
The PC release also raises a technical question for players comparing console-focused action games with computer hardware. No driver performance results for Phantom Blade Zero have been supplied here.
Liang says earlier public demonstrations showed only a small slice of the project. The first presentations featured three bosses without exploration. The game later expanded into a broader story-driven adventure.
That history puts the current material in perspective. A target, a preview and a developer description do not establish measured retail behaviour. Dynamic resolution can change internal image quality while preserving a chosen output resolution. Ray tracing can improve lighting at a performance cost.
Until Phantom Blade Zero is tested on its confirmed platforms after launch, the wooden sword remains a verified design challenge and the 30-weapon system remains a stated feature. Detailed technical information has not yet been provided.
