Grounded 2 Year 2 roadmap details new areas, weapons and secret content

Obsidian Entertainment has outlined its early access roadmap for Grounded 2's second year, confirming new map expansions, weapons, bosses and secret features, following the recent Into the Abyss update

Obsidian Entertainment has published an updated early access roadmap for Grounded 2, setting out its plans for the game's second year of development. The roadmap confirms a series of new features and content updates, including additional map areas, new weapons, bosses, and a selection of secret additions that remain under wraps. This follows the recent Into the Abyss update, which introduced a new underwater area, overhauled swimming mechanics, expanded fast travel, and added new backyard creatures.

Confirmed roadmap features

The roadmap, released via official channels, outlines several major updates scheduled for the coming months. An unnamed autumn update is set to introduce new SCA.B Flavor Schemes-customisable HUD colours-a rotting wood pile area, and a potato beetle mount. These features are intended to expand both the visual customisation and traversal options available to players.

Looking ahead to winter, Obsidian plans to add further buildings and building materials, new buggies, additional bosses and creatures, and Tier 4 Omni-tools. These updates are designed to deepen the survival and construction systems, while also increasing the variety of threats and resources in the backyard environment.

Secret content and community speculation

Not all details have been disclosed. The roadmap includes several features that remain deliberately obscured, with Obsidian choosing not to reveal specifics about one new enemy type, two upcoming areas, and a building feature requested by the community. This approach has led to active speculation among players, with some suggesting that the winter update could introduce a Sandbox area, while others anticipate an expansion to the Abyss or a new Explosion area south of the Pond.

Obsidian's decision to keep certain features secret is consistent with its previous communication strategy, aiming to preserve surprise and encourage community engagement. This mirrors the approach seen in other live-service and early access titles, where roadmaps often balance transparency with the need to manage expectations and maintain player interest.

Release timing and ongoing development

Despite the detailed roadmap, Obsidian has not provided a release window for Grounded 2's full 1.0 launch. The game remains in early access, with the developer stating that the timing of the final release will depend on development progress and player feedback. The Steam page reiterates that no hard date has been set, and that updates will continue to be communicated as development advances.

For context, the practice of outlining future content while withholding a final release date is common among early access projects. As seen with other titles such as those highlighted in recent live-service update coverage, developers often use roadmaps to provide structure without committing to fixed deadlines, allowing for flexibility in response to player feedback and technical challenges.

Numerical context and update cadence

The Into the Abyss update, released just days before the roadmap announcement, delivered a new area, fast travel, and multiple gameplay improvements. The autumn update is expected to add at least three major features, with the winter update promising further expansion. While no specific dates have been confirmed, the roadmap suggests a cadence of substantial updates every few months, with additional content planned beyond the winter period.

Players should note that all features listed in the roadmap are subject to change, and that the timing and scope of future updates may shift as development continues. No pricing changes or edition structure adjustments have been announced in connection with the roadmap.

Live-service roadmaps are a planning tool used by developers to communicate upcoming content, features and improvements for games that receive ongoing updates. In early access titles, roadmaps help set player expectations and provide transparency about development priorities, but they are not binding commitments. Features and release windows may change in response to technical challenges, player feedback or shifting priorities, and some planned content may be delayed or altered before final release.
