EA Sports FC 27 Reveals The Grounds Open World Football Hub

EA Sports has detailed The Grounds, a new open world online hub for FC 27, aiming to blend football culture, social features and multiple game modes. Here's what's confirmed for launch and what remains to be seen

EA Sports has officially unveiled The Grounds, a new online open world hub launching with FC 27. Designed to immerse players in football culture beyond the pitch, The Grounds introduces a persistent social space where players can explore, compete, and interact across a variety of modes and environments. The feature marks a significant shift for the series, drawing comparisons to previous social hubs like PlayStation Home and NBA 2K's The City, but tailored specifically for football fans.

Three Districts and Social Exploration

The Grounds is divided into three distinct districts, each inspired by real-world footballing cities and communities. Montclair channels the atmosphere of Paris, Zeiza draws from Buenos Aires, and Parkside is modelled after suburban Britain. Each district is designed to reflect local football culture, with unique architecture, themed locations, and interactive elements. Players can visit spots such as a five-a-side pitch beneath an Alan Shearer mural or a café named Nutmeg, with each area offering football-themed points of interest and mini-museum elements that provide historical context and trivia.

At the centre of The Grounds is the Terrace, a gathering zone where up to 100 players can spawn into a session. From here, players can access their customisable clubhouses, meet up with friends, or head out into the districts to participate in matches and activities. The world is structured to encourage both casual exploration and direct engagement with football gameplay, with architecture and design cues reflecting the type of mode or activity available in each building.

Game Modes and Activities at Launch

At launch, The Grounds will support a range of football experiences. Core modes include classic 11v11 matches and small-sided formats such as 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 Rush. In addition, players can take part in "Kickabouts"-casual, party-style mini-games scattered throughout the map. Four Kickabouts are confirmed for release: Goal Control, where players compete to score in multiple goals; The Big Race, a dribbling obstacle course; Bucket Ball, a hybrid of football and basketball; and Balloon Ball, a dodgeball-inspired mode where players aim to pop opponents' balloons.

Beyond structured matches, The Grounds features Drop Kick Targets placed throughout the environment, encouraging players to score goals in unconventional locations such as windows or park fences. These activities are intended to add variety, though it remains to be seen how much long-term engagement they will provide once players have sampled each mini-game and challenge.

Progression, Mentors and Customisation

The Grounds introduces a new progression system centred on player-created footballers. Completing challenges and mastering archetypes grants permanent stat upgrades, with the option to respec at no cost. Consumable items called Amps can be equipped for temporary attribute boosts and special perks, with signature Amps themed after real-world players like Kylian Mbappe. Amps are primarily earned through objectives and events, but can also be purchased from the in-game store.

Players will encounter world-famous footballers acting as mentors, including Kylian Mbappe, Paulo Dybala, Chloe Kelly, and Alex Hunter. These mentors provide narrative-driven challenges and guidance, helping players progress through The Grounds and unlock new skills and cosmetics. The store will offer a range of clothing and accessories, including District Collections, replica team shirts, and branded apparel from Nike, Adidas, Puma, and New Balance.

Seasonal Updates and Remaining Questions

EA Sports has outlined a seasonal roadmap for The Grounds, with ten themed seasons planned for the first year. Each season will refresh the world's appearance and objectives, with examples including European Nights (Champions League themed), Screaming Grounds (Halloween), Thunder Struck (Black Friday), and Frozen Grounds (winter). The European Nights campaign, for instance, will reskin the environment with UEFA Champions League branding and introduce themed rewards.

While The Grounds offers a broader range of modes and social features than previous experiments like Volta, questions remain about its long-term appeal and whether it will become a staple of the FC series or fade like earlier modes. The integration of live-service elements, seasonal content, and monetisation through cosmetics and Amps suggests a strong focus on ongoing engagement, but the actual staying power will depend on player response after launch.

The Grounds is scheduled to launch as part of FC 27, with all core features and initial content available from day one. EA Sports has not yet detailed platform-specific differences or performance targets for the mode, and independent hands-on impressions are not yet available. As with any live-service hub, the real test will come in the months following release as players explore the world and engage with its evolving content.

Live-service hubs like The Grounds are designed to blend social interaction, ongoing content updates, and a variety of gameplay experiences within a persistent online world. Unlike traditional menus or lobbies, these spaces aim to keep players engaged through exploration, seasonal events, and customisation. However, their success depends on a balance between novelty, meaningful progression, and the avoidance of repetitive or shallow activities. For players, the value of such hubs often comes down to how well they integrate with core gameplay and whether the evolving content justifies regular return visits.
