Dragonkin: The Banished adds cross-play and new mode in free update

NACON has released the Dracomundus Purgatory update for Dragonkin: The Banished, introducing cross-play, a new timed challenge mode, and a weapon reinforcement system across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S

NACON has announced the release of Dracomundus Purgatory, a substantial free update for Dragonkin: The Banished, now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The update introduces several new features aimed at expanding both the cooperative and endgame experience for players, including full cross-play support, a new challenge mode, and a system for weapon customisation and reinforcement.

Cross-play and City Transfer

With Dracomundus Purgatory, Dragonkin: The Banished now supports cross-play across all available platforms. This means players on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S can join the same sessions, share loot, and progress together regardless of their chosen hardware. The update also adds a city transfer feature, allowing players to move their online city to offline mode and back at any time, ensuring that progression is not tied to a single play style or connection status.

These changes are designed to make the cooperative hack-and-slash more accessible and flexible, particularly for groups of friends who play on different platforms or who alternate between solo and group sessions. The update follows a trend seen in other recent multiplayer releases, such as the addition of new community features in Shujinkou's latest update, reflecting a broader industry move towards platform-agnostic play and persistent progression.

Dracomundus Purgatory Mode

The headline feature of the update is the Dracomundus Purgatory mode, which becomes accessible after completing an endgame hunt. In this mode, players are tasked with clearing three randomly selected islands from a pool of over fifty, defeating all enemies before a timer expires. Destroying draconic altars along the way grants bonus seconds, extending the available time and adding a tactical layer to each run.

Surviving the gauntlet leads to a final confrontation with the Champion of Purgatory, an end-boss encounter that offers a chance to earn new Voracious weapons. The mode is designed as a test of both speed and combat efficiency, rewarding players who can balance aggression with strategic use of the environment.

Voracious Weapons and Reinforcement

Dracomundus Purgatory introduces Voracious weapons, a new category of gear featuring unique passive traits that can alter a player's approach to combat. Players can now sacrifice existing weapons to reinforce their Voracious gear, transferring power and increasing weapon level. The custom forge system allows for precise selection of affixes during reinforcement, enabling players to tailor equipment to their preferred builds and the Ancestral Grid system.

This system is intended to provide long-term progression and greater depth to endgame character builds, giving players more control over their equipment and encouraging experimentation with different playstyles. The update does not introduce new monetisation or paid content, and all features are included as part of the free patch.

Release Timing and Platform Details

Dragonkin: The Banished originally launched in March 2026 and has since built a following among hack-and-slash fans. The Dracomundus Purgatory update was released on 27 July 2026 and is available as a free download for all owners of the game on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. There are no platform-exclusive features or content differences reported for this update, and cross-play is enabled by default for all players.

NACON, the publisher, continues to support the game alongside developer Eko Software, which has a history of developing action RPGs and live-service titles. The update is part of ongoing post-launch support, with further content and balance changes expected in future patches, though no specific roadmap has been detailed at this stage.

Cross-play allows players on different platforms to play together in the same game session, breaking down traditional barriers between console and PC communities. This feature requires careful technical implementation to ensure fair matchmaking, consistent progression, and synchronised updates across all platforms. As more games adopt cross-play, players benefit from larger matchmaking pools and greater flexibility in how and where they play, but it also places increased demands on developers to maintain parity and stability across diverse hardware ecosystems.
