Bethesda's Todd Howard Breaks Silence on Reddit as Fans Demand Oblivion Patch

Bethesda's Todd Howard has posted on Reddit for the first time in months, encouraging player feedback after the studio's latest roadmap. The move has triggered renewed calls for updates to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

Bethesda Game Studios' chief Todd Howard has made an uncommon appearance on Reddit, addressing the community directly following the publisher's latest multi-year release roadmap. Howard's post, which appeared in the r/games subreddit, emphasised that the studio is actively monitoring player feedback and encouraged users to continue sharing their ideas for future projects. The timing comes as Bethesda faces heightened scrutiny over its post-launch support for recent remasters and the direction of its flagship franchises.

Roadmap Reveals and Studio Priorities

The Reddit post followed Bethesda's public outline of its upcoming slate, which includes The Elder Scrolls 6 as the studio's primary focus, Fallout 5 entering pre-production, and confirmation that Obsidian is developing a new Fallout title. Additionally, remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in progress, while Starfield remains in active development with further content planned. The roadmap was released in the wake of significant layoffs across Xbox's studios, including Bethesda, as Microsoft's gaming division undergoes restructuring under new leadership.

Howard's message described himself as a "professional lurker" who regularly reads community comments, but rarely posts. He stated that the recent roadmap disclosure was intended to increase transparency and invited players to continue submitting feedback, noting that many ideas are sourced from Reddit discussions. This marks Howard's first Reddit comment in six months, with previous posts being infrequent and typically reserved for major milestones or community acknowledgements.

Immediate Player Response and Patch Requests

Howard's engagement prompted an immediate reaction from players, with the most prominent requests centred on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. The remaster, developed in partnership with Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, has not received a PC patch since July 2025. Players have reported that longstanding technical issues, including performance degradation over extended play sessions, remain unresolved. Community members have called for the remaster to receive the same level of post-launch attention as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, expressing concern that Oblivion Remastered feels neglected despite its commercial success.

According to Bethesda's own figures, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has attracted over 9 million players since launch. Despite this, the lack of recent updates has led to frustration among the player base, particularly on PC where technical issues persist. The remaster is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on 11 August 2026, raising the possibility that a major update could coincide with the new platform release, though no patch has been officially announced for existing versions.

Franchise Events and Future Content

Beyond the immediate patch concerns, Bethesda has outlined additional plans for its major franchises. Fallout's 30th anniversary will be marked by a live event in Washington, D.C. in 2027, replacing the traditional Fallout Day broadcast. In 2027, Fallout 76 is also set to receive a significant expansion, Raven Rock, which will serve as a narrative prequel to Fallout 3. Meanwhile, Starfield remains a key part of Bethesda's future, with further downloadable content in development and ongoing support confirmed.

The studio's renewed focus on its core properties comes as Microsoft seeks to accelerate the release cadence of its most successful franchises. This shift is intended to address both internal restructuring and player demand for more frequent updates and new content across Bethesda's portfolio.

Ongoing Uncertainty Around Patch Delivery

While Howard's Reddit post signals a willingness to engage more openly with the community, there is no official confirmation that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered will receive a new patch in the near future. The absence of updates since July 2025 has left players uncertain about the studio's commitment to resolving technical issues on PC and other platforms. With the Switch 2 release approaching, attention will be on whether Bethesda delivers a substantial update for all versions or continues its current support strategy.

For now, players are left waiting for concrete patch notes or a timeline for further improvements. The situation highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing new development with sustained post-launch support, especially as Bethesda's resources are increasingly directed towards upcoming flagship releases.

Remasters differ from remakes in that they typically update the original game's visuals, performance, and compatibility for modern platforms without fundamentally altering core gameplay or content. While remasters can introduce technical improvements and quality-of-life features, they often rely on the original codebase, which can limit the extent of fixes and enhancements. This distinction is important for players managing expectations around post-launch support and the scope of future updates.
