Baldur's Gate 3 mod adds a new region after 18 months

SquallyDaBeanz has released version 0.8 of a beta expansion for Baldur's Gate 3. It takes players beyond the Shadow-Cursed Lands and into a new region built around exploration and combat.

Baldur's Gate 3 now has a new route beyond the Shadow-Cursed Lands. The public beta of Baldur's Gate 3: Act Two Expansion, also called The Chionthar Wilds, adds a region between the end of Act Two and the start of Act Three.

SquallyDaBeanz created the project. Version 0.8 is available through Nexus Mods.

A new route

The mod opens after the events in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Players reach it by crossing the bridge out of Reithwin near the Road to Baldur's Gate waypoint.

In the unmodified game, that route leads toward Baldur's Gate. The expansion sends the party into the Chionthar Wilds before Act Three begins. TheGamer and ScreenRant both describe the area as a new part of the campaign, not a separate standalone scenario.

The modder compares the region's scope with Act One's Wilderness. That does not mean the two areas have the same amount of content or reactivity. The current beta is aimed at parties around levels 8 to 10. It focuses on exploration and combat, so the Chionthar Wilds is more than a short story bridge between acts.

Players can return to the Shadow-Cursed Lands at first. That gives them time to finish unfinished business before the route becomes more restricted. Later, the expansion introduces a Point of No Return. A warning appears before the transition, so players are not sent into Act Three without notice.

What the beta adds

The beta includes the Chionthar Wilds, new quests, dungeons, NPCs, cutscenes, lore and stories. It also adds custom creatures and stat blocks. The new encounters therefore have their own combat framework instead of simply reusing the base game's existing content.

The author's description calls the project an expansion with "new quests, dungeons, NPCs, cutscenes, lore and stories." That makes it a content expansion for Act Two, not a cosmetic modification.

The scale is measurable, even though the writing is not finished. The launch feature list contains more than 70 new items and over 30 combat encounters. A full clear is expected to give a party around 30,000 experience points.

InvenGlobal reported those figures. They describe the beta's stated content, not an independently tested estimate of playtime.

This is not being presented as a seamless copy of Larian's quest design. SquallyDaBeanz has warned that the mod does not offer the same level of reactivity as vanilla quests. The focus is exploration and combat. Progression is described as fairly linear despite the new region and added stories.

What remains unfinished

The release came after roughly 18 months of development and nearly a year and a half after the first teaser trailer. Players are getting a playable public beta, not a finished version.

ScreenRant, TheGamer and InvenGlobal have all reported the beta status. Version 0.8 should not be treated as the final release.

Version 1.0 is planned to improve the writing, dialogue and character work. The developers also plan to finish cutscenes and add more dialogue tied to characters, classes and races.

The stated plans include expanded lore notes and in-game text, combat and equipment balancing, revised boss mechanics, additional Legendary Actions, bug fixes and general polish.

Those improvements are not part of the current beta unless the release already contains them. The available details show the project's direction. They do not provide independent testing of its stability, compatibility, encounter balance or response to every possible party choice.

Campaign consequences

The mod changes the campaign's expected route. Players who install it will enter the new region before Act Three. The expansion controls when the main game resumes after its own content is complete.

That makes the Point of No Return more than a standard warning. It protects the mod's place inside the wider campaign.

Installation timing also matters. According to details reported by InvenGlobal, the mod can be added to an existing save if it is installed before the party leaves Act Two. A QuickStart option is available for players starting a new run.

This is beta content, so players should handle compatibility and save management with care. Separate backups are advisable before adding the mod to an ongoing campaign.

Players looking for another open-ended narrative layer may find the beta more structured than Larian's original quests. Those who want extra battles, equipment and dungeons after the Shadow-Cursed Lands may find its narrower design easier to understand. The mod does not claim to reproduce the base game's full reactivity.

A beta is an unfinished release. It can contain working quests and encounters while still lacking finished dialogue, polished cutscenes, balanced equipment or reliable responses to every player choice.

Baldur's Gate 3: Act Two Expansion is therefore a sizeable community-built campaign extension, not a replacement for Larian's Act Two. Based on the available information, its strongest feature is the amount of exploration and combat already in the beta. Its main limitation is the trade-off between breadth and reactivity.
