Intergalactic Could Push Naughty Dog Toward God of War Combat

Former Naughty Dog animator Rico Flores thinks Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet could loosen the studio's motion-capture style. The reveal has yet to show how combat will work in the finished game.

A sword-wielding leap toward a giant robot is the clearest hint yet that Naughty Dog may be testing a different kind of action. Former studio animator Rico Flores sees a possible move toward the heightened combat associated with God of War. He is reading the footage, not describing a system confirmed by the studio.

A different animation language

Flores made the comparison in an interview with KIWI TALKZ. He spent more than five years at Naughty Dog, working on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. He later moved to BioWare, then Archetype Entertainment, and now works at emptyvessel, the team behind DEFECT.

His view draws on the studio's earlier animation style. Flores recalls Naughty Dog as a keyframe-focused outfit on Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter, where animators could push poses with squash-and-stretch effects. By the time he worked there, he says, animation had become much more closely tied to motion capture and physical realism.

Intergalactic appears to put more emphasis on action than the studio's recent, grounded adventures. Flores thinks its setting could give animators room to move beyond realistic motion and make combat more expressive. That is an expectation based on his experience and the footage, not a description Naughty Dog has confirmed.

What the reveal suggests

The moment Flores points to shows protagonist Jordan A. Mun fighting a giant robot before springing into the air with a sword. He estimated the leap at around 15 feet and read it as a sign that the studio may be comfortable with a more heightened style. The footage shows that kind of action in the reveal. It does not establish how often those moves occur or how combat works in play.

God of War is a useful comparison, not a confirmed template. Naughty Dog has not detailed its combat systems or said that Santa Monica Studio's series is a direct influence. GamingBible reports that Naughty Dog has not identified the short scene as representative of actual gameplay. One dramatic animation can suggest a shift in tone, but it reveals little about the mechanics or pace of a full combat system.

Flores was less taken with the reveal's tone, though he said he intends to buy the game. He praised Naughty Dog's talent and pointed to its long development process as a reason to expect carefully made work. That is his personal assessment, not evidence of the game's final quality. A former developer's enthusiasm is no substitute for a hands-on verdict.

The wait for playable detail

Naughty Dog announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as a new intellectual property at The Game Awards in December 2024. GamingBible reported that studio head Neil Druckmann said in a September 28, 2026 message for The Last of Us Day that the game will be fully presented in 2027. No further major information is planned before the end of 2026, according to that report. The game is confirmed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Naughty Dog has announced no release date or window, pre-orders, or full gameplay demonstration.

Intergalactic is the studio's first new intellectual property since The Last of Us and its first proper science-fiction game. It follows bounty hunter Jordan A. Mun, played by Tati Gabrielle, after she becomes stranded on Sempiria. The remote planet has been cut off from the wider universe for hundreds of years. Jordan is pursuing the criminal group Five Aces.

The setting is described as retrofuturistic, with isolation at the centre of the story. Jordan is alone on Sempiria and must uncover the planet's history as she tries to escape. The announced cast includes Kumail Nanjiani. Troy Baker is also part of the cast.

According to La Crème du Gaming, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are composing the music. Naughty Dog has said the story explores faith and religion through a fictional religion and its institutions. The setting lies roughly 2,000 years in the future, in an alternate timeline that diverged in the late 1980s. Jordan's goal is to become the first person in more than 600 years to escape Sempiria's orbit. NGB has also covered the separate, long-awaited science-fiction release Squadron 42. That game's listing and schedule offer no evidence about Naughty Dog's plans.

What keyframe combat means

With keyframe animation, animators set important poses and transitions directly. That gives them room to exaggerate movement beyond what a motion-capture performance records. Motion capture starts with recorded human movement, which can then be adapted for a game. Neither approach determines whether combat feels good. Timing and responsiveness matter, as does how attacks connect.

Flores's comparison points to a possible creative shift, but the reveal does not prove Naughty Dog has built a God of War-style combat system. The studio's history makes a return to more authored animation plausible. Until Naughty Dog shows sustained gameplay, the combat remains a prediction rather than a settled feature.
