GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Pre-Orders Outpace Standard Despite Higher Price

Take-Two Interactive has revealed that the $100 Ultimate Edition of GTA 6 is currently outselling the $80 Standard Edition, with early buyers showing a clear preference for the premium package and its digital extras

Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that pre-orders for the $100 Ultimate Edition of Grand Theft Auto VI are currently outpacing those for the $80 Standard Edition, despite the higher price point. The publisher's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, discussed the trend in a recent interview, attributing the skew towards the premium edition to the enthusiasm of long-time Grand Theft Auto fans and the additional digital content included in the Ultimate package.

Edition Breakdown and Player Incentives

The Ultimate Edition of GTA 6 offers buyers a selection of digital extras not found in the Standard Edition. While these additions do not affect gameplay or provide real-world collectibles, they appear to be enough to sway committed fans towards the more expensive option. The Standard Edition, priced at $80, contains only the base game, whereas the $100 Ultimate Edition bundles in exclusive digital items, though the specifics remain focused on cosmetic or bonus content rather than gameplay advantages.

Franchise Loyalty and Pre-Order Behaviour

According to Zelnick, the current sales split is likely a reflection of the franchise's most dedicated audience making their purchases early. With nearly 13 years having passed since the release of Grand Theft Auto V, anticipation for GTA 6 is exceptionally high, and nostalgia may be playing a significant role in driving players towards the Ultimate Edition. This pattern is consistent with other major franchise launches, where early adopters often opt for premium editions to secure all available content from day one.

Sales Figures and Industry Context

At present, Take-Two has not disclosed exact pre-order numbers for either edition, but the company's confirmation of the Ultimate Edition's lead is notable given the $20 price difference. The $100 Ultimate Edition and $80 Standard Edition are both available for pre-order, with the Ultimate Edition's digital bonuses serving as the main differentiator. This trend echoes broader industry patterns, as seen when Take-Two's CEO previously discussed the importance of delivering high-value content to justify premium pricing, a topic also explored in relation to streaming and console parity in Take-Two's outlook on future game delivery.

It remains to be seen whether this pre-launch preference for the Ultimate Edition will persist after GTA 6's release, or if the balance will shift as more casual players enter the market. The publisher has not yet confirmed a PC release date, which could further influence edition sales and platform distribution in the months ahead.

Edition structure is a common feature in modern AAA game launches, with publishers offering multiple versions at different price points to cater to varying levels of player investment. Ultimate and deluxe editions typically include digital bonuses such as cosmetic items, early access, or in-game currency, but rarely provide gameplay advantages. This approach allows publishers to capture additional revenue from the most engaged segment of their audience while keeping the core experience accessible to standard buyers.
