Netmarble has launched the Fighters Festa event for THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK, introducing new fighters, expanded team battles and limited-time rewards as the mobile RPG celebrates its first year since release

Netmarble has announced a major update for THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK to coincide with the game's first anniversary, introducing the Fighters Festa event and a range of new features. The event, which runs from 20 August to 16 September, brings new playable characters, expanded progression systems and a significant overhaul to the Team Battle mode. This update is available now for players on mobile platforms.

Anniversary Event and New Fighters

The centrepiece of the Fighters Festa is the Kyo Kusanagi Arrival event, featuring the KOF '98 version of Kyo Kusanagi as a new Legendary fighter. Players can raise Kyo up to 10-Star during the event, with his [Endurance] Synergy offering new team-building options. To mark the anniversary, Netmarble is distributing a Thank-You Gift of 500,000 Rubies and launching a 1st Anniversary Special Check-In event, providing daily login rewards throughout the celebration period.

Alongside Kyo, the update introduces Leona Heidern (KOF XIII version) as a Legendary fighter with [Rush] Synergy. Leona's arrival event and a dedicated [Rush] Synergy Pick-Up event are available until 2 September, giving players a limited window to obtain her and other fighters with matching synergy. Athena Asamiya also returns with a Keepsake event, running from 20 August to 2 September, allowing players to upgrade unique items for additional stats and effects.

Team Battle Overhaul and Progression Changes

The Team Battle mode has been reworked, expanding fighter deployment from five to seven members and introducing a Formation System that grants team-wide buffs based on chosen offensive or defensive setups. Season Buffs will now rotate every two weeks, altering the competitive environment and encouraging players to adapt their strategies. Practice Mode has also been improved, enabling players to test team compositions under the same penalty conditions as live matches.

Progression content has been expanded with new and updated stages, including Gold Rush, Void Sanctuary, City of Vengeance, Paradox Research Lab and Influence. The Minigame Arcade, featuring five mini-games from the game's history, will open on 27 August as part of the anniversary celebrations.

Franchise Context and Platform Details

THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK is based on SNK's long-running fighting game series, reimagining classic characters in pixel art reminiscent of THE KING OF FIGHTERS R-2 on NEOGEO POCKET COLOR. The game allows players to assemble teams of five to twenty-five fighters, combining different synergies and formations for strategic combat. For those interested in other mobile releases, the recent launch of Dawnfolk brought minimalist city-building to iOS and Android, as covered in our feature on new mobile city-builders.

Netmarble, founded in Korea in 2000, continues to expand its portfolio with titles such as Solo Leveling:ARISE and MARVEL Future Fight. THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK remains available on mobile platforms, with ongoing support and regular updates. Players can follow official channels for further announcements and event details.
