NEXON has released the Season 4 Episode 1 update for The First Descendant, introducing a new main story, mega dungeon, additional character and weapons, plus balance changes and in-game events
The First Descendant has received its Season 4 Episode 1 update, now live across supported platforms. NEXON and the development team have introduced a major content drop that brings a new main story arc, a large-scale mega dungeon, a new playable Descendant, additional weapon systems, and a series of balance adjustments and in-game events. This update continues the game's live-service approach, expanding both narrative and gameplay options for players.
Main Story and Mega Dungeon
The centrepiece of Season 4 Episode 1 is the new main story, The Great Clash, which sees the Descendants confronting their long-standing adversary Karel in a final showdown. The narrative culminates in an assault on Albion, the Descendants' home base, with Karel's motivations and hidden history explored throughout the campaign. The update also introduces the mega dungeon 'Karel's Mothership', designed as a multi-phase boss encounter where players face Karel three times, each with evolving attack patterns and new dungeon mechanics. The dungeon is notably larger than previous Infiltration Operations and features unique gimmicks that can be used to shift the tide of battle.
For a limited period, the highest difficulty mode, Conquest, will be available from 3 September to 15 October. Players who clear Conquest at least once during this window will receive exclusive rewards, including the 'Hero of the Dawn' Name Card, a UI theme, and a unique skin for the Transcendent Weapon 'Malicious Dominator'.
New Descendant, Weapons and Game Modes
Raven joins the roster as the latest Descendant, bringing a goth-inspired design and a playstyle focused on shield management and shotgun combat. Raven is a Non-Attribute Fusion character who does not use MP, instead relying on shield-based mechanics and agile movement. She can be unlocked by completing the new story, which grants the necessary materials for acquisition, making her accessible to both new and returning players.
The update also debuts the Transcendent weapon tier, offering a new progression path for both firearm and skill-based builds. These weapons drop from Normal difficulty upwards, with quality improving as players continue to farm, ensuring that early investment is rewarded. In addition, a new roguelite-inspired mode called Trials has been added, featuring seven zones per run and a deck-building system known as Variable Codes. Players can experiment with different builds, including Rotational Builds provided by the development team, allowing immediate access to high-level play without meeting all entry requirements.
Balance Changes and In-Game Events
Season 4 Episode 1 brings balance adjustments for Descendants Keelan and Kyle. Kyle receives buffs to his shield-scaling damage and improved skill chaining, while Keelan's rework aims to lower execution difficulty and raise his minimum damage output. Alongside these changes, the update launches six in-game events, including daily attendance rewards, challenge missions supporting new and reworked characters, accelerated research weeks, and weekend experience boosts. These events are scheduled across August, September and into November, with specific dates and reward details outlined in the official patch notes.
Players interested in city-building titles may also want to explore recent launches such as Dawnfolk, which recently arrived on mobile platforms, offering a different take on strategic progression and resource management.
Live-Service Structure and Community Engagement
The First Descendant continues to operate as a live-service action RPG, with regular seasonal updates and ongoing community engagement. Players can join the official Discord server to provide feedback and participate in discussions, while updates and news are shared across X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, YouTube and the game's official website. The game, built on Unreal Engine 5, supports up to eight-player co-op boss fights and features a looter-shooter progression model, with new equipment and materials contributing to character development.
The game originally launched in July 2024 and is available globally, with NEXON Korea overseeing development and live operations. The publisher is known for its portfolio of online titles, including MapleStory and Dungeon&Fighter, and continues to expand its reach across PC, console and mobile platforms.
Live-service games like The First Descendant rely on regular content updates, balance patches and limited-time events to maintain player engagement. These updates often introduce new storylines, characters, and gameplay systems, while also addressing balance and progression concerns raised by the community. The seasonal structure allows developers to respond to player feedback and adjust the game's direction over time, but also means that access to certain content or rewards may be time-limited, encouraging regular play and participation during event windows.
