Rewind 99 Leaves Early Access With Expanded Features and PC Launch Date

Gunmetal Games has confirmed Rewind 99 will exit Early Access on 27 August, bringing a major update to its 1999 video store sim on Steam. The 1.0 release includes new areas, improved AI, performance upgrades and a temporary pause on online co-op

Gunmetal Games has announced that Rewind 99, its open-world video store management sim set in a stylised 1999, will officially launch out of Early Access on 27 August 2026. The 1.0 release is scheduled for 8 AM Pacific Time and will be available on Steam for $11.99, with a 30% launch discount reducing the price to $8.39 during the first week. This marks the end of a development period focused on player feedback and technical improvements, as the studio aims to deliver a more complete and stable experience for PC players.

Expanded World and Gameplay Systems

Rewind 99 places players in charge of the last video rental shop in Reshoot Springs, a fictional low-poly town facing the decline of physical media. While the core gameplay involves stocking shelves, hiring staff and managing the counter, the game quickly opens up into a broader sandbox. Players can explore the town, uncover hidden side activities such as running an underground fight club or producing films, and gradually build what the game describes as an 'empire'. This approach sets Rewind 99 apart from more traditional management sims, offering progression systems, NPCs with individual backstories, and a willingness to embrace the stranger side of late-90s nostalgia.

The 1.0 update expands the playable map, unlocking new areas of Reshoot Springs and introducing secret locations for players to discover. Lore fragments, in the form of documents and artefacts, are now scattered throughout the environment, providing additional narrative depth for those who seek it. Quality-of-life improvements and balance adjustments have also been implemented across stocking, pricing, customisation and progression systems, alongside new features such as setting store hours and more aggressive late fee collection.

Technical Improvements and AI Overhaul

One of the most significant changes in the 1.0 release is a complete overhaul of employee AI. Staff now restock, navigate and prioritise tasks in a way that is intended to feel more natural and strategic, addressing player concerns from Early Access where hiring could feel more like a liability than an advantage. The update also delivers a major performance optimisation pass, targeting frame-rate drops and stability issues that were reported during extended play sessions. These technical improvements are designed to ensure a smoother experience across a wider range of PC hardware.

Gunmetal Games has stated that the 1.0 build is the result of direct player feedback, with a focus on resolving the most persistent issues from Early Access. The studio has also committed to a regular patch schedule post-launch, with further content updates planned as part of an evolving roadmap. For those interested in the broader indie PC scene, the approach to post-launch support echoes the ongoing update cycles seen in other recent releases, such as the iterative improvements highlighted in the launch of FEED IT on Steam.

Co-op Status and Future Roadmap

While Rewind 99 originally shipped with four-player online co-op during Early Access, this feature will be temporarily disabled in the 1.0 release. According to the developer, internal testing revealed performance instability in the co-op mode, and resolving these issues is now the studio's top post-launch priority. Save files created in the 1.0 version will remain compatible with co-op when it returns, and players interested in helping to test the mode can join the official Discord server. Gunmetal Games has indicated that a timeline for the co-op update will be shared after further testing is complete.

Rewind 99 is available exclusively on Steam for Windows PC. A free demo, titled Rewind 99: Demo Disc, is also offered for those who want to try the game before purchasing. Review copies are available on request, and the studio has made a press kit and trailer accessible via official channels.

Early access is a development model where players can purchase and play a game before its full release, often while it is still being actively developed. This approach allows developers to gather feedback, fix bugs and refine features based on real player experience. However, early-access builds may lack content, stability or polish compared to the final version. When a game leaves early access, it typically signals that the core systems are complete and the developer considers it ready for a wider audience, though ongoing updates and improvements may still follow.
