Mahou Shoujo Y has been officially announced as a new visual novel for PC, following two college students who become magical girls. The game features turn-based combat, choice-driven narrative and multiple endings, with a planned Q2 2027 release

A new visual novel, Mahou Shoujo Y, has been officially announced for PC, introducing players to a story centred on two college students who unexpectedly gain magical powers. The game is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2027, with its Steam page set to go live on 17 August 2026. The announcement confirms a narrative-driven experience that blends character relationships, turn-based combat and branching storylines.

Story and Character Focus

Mahou Shoujo Y follows Sofia and Lana, two university students who are thrust into the world of magical girls and must confront sinister forces together. Each protagonist draws her magical abilities from a unique artistic discipline: Sofia's powers are inspired by figure skating, while Lana's magic is rooted in drawing. The narrative will also introduce additional magical girls, each contributing to the unfolding plot and combat scenarios. The game's structure promises a strong emphasis on character development and the evolving relationship between the two leads.

Turn-Based Combat and Progression

The gameplay is built around story-driven, turn-based battles, with each heroine possessing distinct abilities that can be upgraded as the story progresses. Unlike traditional RPGs, Mahou Shoujo Y avoids random encounters and grinding, instead tying every combat scenario directly to the narrative. Players will face a variety of enemies, including powerful bosses and their minions, in encounters designed to reflect the protagonists' artistic influences. The absence of filler battles is intended to keep the focus on story and tactical decision-making.

Choice-Driven Narrative and Endings

Mahou Shoujo Y is described as a choice-driven visual novel, offering multiple endings shaped by player decisions. The outcome of the story will depend on how players navigate the relationship between Sofia and Lana, as well as the fates of supporting characters. This approach is consistent with other narrative-focused games that prioritise player agency and replayability. The developers have not yet detailed the full range of possible endings or the extent of branching paths, but the structure suggests significant narrative variation.

Release Timing and Platform Details

The game is currently confirmed for PC, with a planned release window in Q2 2027. The Steam page is scheduled to become public on 17 August 2026, providing further details and wishlist access. No information has been released regarding potential console versions or additional platforms. For players interested in other recent PC visual novel launches, the release of Road Diner Simulator Prologue on Steam earlier this year offered a different take on narrative-driven gameplay, as covered in our recent report on Road Diner Simulator Prologue.

Visual novels often use branching narratives and player choices to deliver multiple endings, encouraging replayability and personal investment in the story. In Mahou Shoujo Y, the integration of turn-based combat with a choice-driven structure aims to blend narrative depth with tactical gameplay. This approach distinguishes it from more linear visual novels and highlights the importance of player agency in shaping both character relationships and the overall outcome.
