GTA 6 Brings Back San Andreas-Style Stats and Character Progression

Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a detailed character stat system reminiscent of San Andreas, tracking weight, strength, nutrition and more, with player actions directly shaping the protagonists' physical condition

Rockstar has officially revealed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will reintroduce a comprehensive character stat system, echoing the RPG-style mechanics last seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. While the game is set in a modernised Vice City, the return of these simulation-driven features marks a significant shift from the more streamlined approach of recent entries in the series.

Stat-Driven Gameplay Returns

During a recent demonstration, Rockstar showcased how GTA 6 will monitor a wide range of statistics for its two main characters, Jason and Lucia. The system tracks height, weight, sleep, nutrition, calories, muscle, fat, and strength, with each stat influenced by player choices. Eating food will have a direct impact on health, and overeating can cause characters to gain weight. Players will also be able to visit gyms to increase muscle and strength, either alone or with both protagonists together, allowing for more efficient stat management.

This approach draws clear inspiration from San Andreas, where protagonist CJ's physical attributes changed based on diet, exercise, and lifestyle. In GTA 6, these mechanics appear to be even more granular, with food items marked by icons indicating their effect on health or stamina, and activities such as running triggering on-screen notifications for cardio workouts. The system is designed to make the protagonists' appearance and abilities a reflection of the player's actions throughout the game.

Simulation and Player Choice

The stat system in GTA 6 is not limited to cosmetic changes. Nutrition and calorie intake are expected to play a role in maintaining peak condition, with different foods providing varying benefits or drawbacks. While it is unlikely that the game will introduce survival mechanics such as starvation, players may need to balance their characters' diets to optimise muscle gain and strength, particularly when using gym facilities. Sleep is also tracked, suggesting that rest will be necessary to keep health and stamina at optimal levels, similar to the core systems seen in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar's decision to bring back these simulation elements comes after they were largely absent from Grand Theft Auto IV and V, but quietly reappeared in Red Dead Redemption 2. In that title, Arthur Morgan's weight and health were affected by eating habits, and maintaining a balanced diet became a subtle but important part of gameplay. GTA 6 appears to be building on this foundation, offering a more complex and interconnected set of stats that influence both appearance and performance.

Franchise Context and Technical Ambition

San Andreas was notable for its ambitious simulation of player-driven character progression, with NPCs reacting to CJ's physique and choices. GTA 6's stat system seems to expand on this idea, potentially affecting not just how Jason and Lucia look, but also how they interact with the world and other characters. The inclusion of gyms, detailed nutrition tracking, and sleep management points to a deeper level of immersion and personalisation than previous entries.

While Rockstar has not yet detailed every aspect of the system, the evidence so far suggests a return to the kind of simulation that made San Andreas stand out. The developer has also indicated that these features are designed to be accessible, so players who prefer to focus on missions rather than stat management will not be forced into micromanagement. However, those who engage with the system will find their choices reflected in both gameplay and narrative outcomes.

What Remains Unclear

Despite the detailed demonstration, several questions remain about how far the stat system will go in practice. It is not yet confirmed whether NPCs will comment on the protagonists' appearance as in San Andreas, or how much impact stats will have on mission outcomes and world interactions. The balance between simulation and accessibility will be crucial, especially given GTA 6's expected mass-market reach.

Rockstar has not announced a specific release date for GTA 6, but the game is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The return of stat-driven progression is one of several ambitious features being introduced, alongside a large open world and a new wanted system. For those interested in how other major franchises are handling gameplay innovation, Insomniac's recent Marvel's Wolverine gameplay reveal has also prompted discussion about in-game visual cues, as explored in our coverage of the red tracking trail mechanic.

Stat-driven character progression in open-world games refers to systems where a player's actions-such as eating, exercising, or resting-directly influence their character's physical attributes and abilities. Unlike purely cosmetic customisation, these mechanics can affect gameplay, mission outcomes, and even how the world responds to the player. Balancing depth and accessibility is a challenge, as overly complex systems can deter some players, while others appreciate the added immersion and control over their character's development.
