Dung Ho! Pirates of the Veld launches with chaotic co-op action

Dung Ho! Pirates of the Veld is now available, bringing six-player co-op dung beetle chaos, pirate enemies, and a campaign across Africa from the team behind Borderlands and Skylanders

Lesser Weevil has officially released Dung Ho! Pirates of the Veld, a new co-op action game that tasks up to six players with guiding a giant ball of dung across African landscapes. The game is now available as a full release, following a development cycle led by a team with experience on Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Skylanders. Dung Ho! Pirates of the Veld combines physics-driven multiplayer challenges with a deliberately chaotic approach to teamwork and environmental hazards.

Gameplay and Features

Players take on the role of dung beetles, working together to roll their prized dung ball through a series of levels filled with wildlife, unpredictable obstacles, and pirate-themed adversaries. The game supports up to six players in online or local co-op, with each session designed to last between 30 and 60 minutes. The core challenge lies in maintaining control of the dung ball while navigating hazards and managing the unpredictable consequences of shared control. Customisation options allow players to personalise their beetles, while a campaign structure and a range of achievements provide ongoing objectives.

Pirate Enemies and Campaign Structure

Pirate enemies are a central addition in this release, introducing new threats and a climbing challenge that expands the campaign's variety. Safari-themed adventures and additional customisation options are also included, broadening the game's appeal beyond its initial premise. The campaign is structured to encourage replayability, with each run offering different combinations of obstacles and enemy encounters. Achievements are designed to reward both skill and perseverance, catering to players who enjoy chasing in-game milestones.

Development Background and Studio Context

Lesser Weevil, based in Bend, Oregon and founded by Matthew Armstrong, is an independent studio focused on collaborative and experimental game design. The team's previous experience on Borderlands and Skylanders is evident in Dung Ho! Pirates of the Veld's emphasis on co-op play and playful mechanics. The studio's approach prioritises accessibility and shared enjoyment, aiming to create games that are easy to pick up but challenging to master. The release of Dung Ho! Pirates of the Veld marks a significant milestone for the studio, positioning it within the growing market for unconventional multiplayer experiences.

Co-op games like Dung Ho! Pirates of the Veld rely on physics simulation to create unpredictable and often comedic outcomes. In these titles, the interaction between player input and in-game physics can lead to both moments of teamwork and accidental chaos. This approach differs from tightly scripted action games, as the unpredictability of physics-driven systems means that no two play sessions are exactly alike. For players, this can result in a blend of frustration and laughter, with the game's design encouraging experimentation and adaptation rather than strict mastery of set patterns.
