Tomb Raider: Catalyst Officially Delayed to 2028 by Amazon Games

Amazon Games has confirmed that Tomb Raider: Catalyst will now launch in 2028, moving back from its previously announced 2027 window. The next major Tomb Raider entry is being developed by Crystal Dynamics for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S

Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the next mainline entry in the long-running franchise, will not arrive until 2028. Amazon Games has officially confirmed the delay, pushing the release back from its previously announced 2027 window. The news comes as part of a wider update on the series' release schedule and development status.

Delay Confirmed and New Timeline

The confirmation was provided by Amazon's video game lead, Jeffrey Gattis, who stated that Tomb Raider: Catalyst is now scheduled for release in 2028. This follows earlier speculation after both Catalyst and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis were announced together in December last year, with Catalyst originally targeting a 2027 launch. Legacy of Atlantis is now set to arrive first, with a release date of 12 February 2027.

No specific launch window within 2028 has been given for Catalyst, and Amazon has not detailed the reasons behind the delay. The game remains in development at Crystal Dynamics, utilising Unreal Engine 5, and is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The publisher has not indicated any changes to the platforms or the overall vision for the project.

What We Know About Catalyst

Tomb Raider: Catalyst is described as a next-generation experience, with Lara Croft embarking on a new adventure set in Northern India. The story is set after a mythical cataclysm, with ancient secrets and rival treasure hunters playing a central role. Crystal Dynamics has emphasised that Catalyst will mark a bold direction for the series, but no gameplay footage or in-depth feature breakdown has been released to date.

Alix Wilton Regan will voice Lara Croft in both Catalyst and Legacy of Atlantis, taking over from Camilla Luddington, who played the character throughout the Survivor Trilogy. The games are being published by Amazon Game Studios, which is also involved in a Tomb Raider television adaptation for Prime Video starring Sophie Turner.

Development Context and Studio Status

Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind the series, has faced significant restructuring over the past year, including four rounds of redundancies. Despite these challenges, the studio has reiterated its commitment to the Tomb Raider franchise. The Embracer-owned team continues to lead development on Catalyst, with Amazon Games handling publishing duties.

The delay means that players will see a gap of at least a year between the release of Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst. This revised schedule places Catalyst's launch after a period of considerable change for both the studio and the wider franchise. For context, the recent presentation of a rare, sealed Modern Warfare 2 copy to Inde Navarrette at Fanatics Fest, as covered in our report on classic game collectables, highlights how franchise timelines and player anticipation can shape the legacy of major gaming series.

What Remains Uncertain

While the new release window for Tomb Raider: Catalyst is now official, many details remain unconfirmed. Amazon and Crystal Dynamics have not provided a revised gameplay reveal timeline, nor have they shared updated technical targets or performance expectations for the game. There is also no information on potential editions, pricing, or pre-order plans. With the project still in active development, further updates are likely to follow as the 2028 release approaches.

For players tracking the future of the Tomb Raider series, the delay underscores the unpredictable nature of large-scale game development, especially when studios undergo significant organisational changes. The next major milestone will be the launch of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis in February 2027, which may offer the first substantial look at the franchise's new direction.

Understanding game delays requires recognising the complexity of modern development cycles. Large projects like Tomb Raider: Catalyst often face shifting timelines due to technical ambition, resource allocation, and evolving creative goals. Delays can result from the need for additional polish, changes in project scope, or external factors affecting the studio. For players, a delay means a longer wait, but it can also lead to a more stable and complete experience at launch if the extra time is used effectively.
