Shadow of the Road trailer leans into anime style

Another Angle Games and Owlcat Games have paired with Japanese hypermetal band Earthists for a character-led trailer. Shadow of the Road now targets 10 March 2027 on PC, after a delay from 12 November 2026.

The footage cuts from battles to a training montage, with Japanese hypermetal band Earthists driving the edit. Another Angle Games and publisher Owlcat Games have released the trailer for Shadow of the Road. The game is scheduled to launch on 10 March 2027, after its release moved from 12 November 2026.

A trailer, not a gameplay demo

Familiar anime-opening beats introduce the game's characters and conflict. The video shows battles and companions before shifting into a training montage. It gives the project a clear tone, but the trailer does not identify the footage as captured gameplay or show how players control a fight.

That distinction matters. Edited action can establish atmosphere without revealing how turns work or how the tactical maps are laid out. The footage shows how Owlcat and Another Angle Games want to present the story. It does not demonstrate the combat system in play.

Earthists gives the trailer a strong musical identity, while its structure puts the ensemble ahead of any single hero. The anime comparison is clear, but the video does not establish that Shadow of the Road is an adaptation or that an anime is in development.

Rōnin caught in a war

The story begins after the lost battle of Toba-Fushimi. Samurai turned rōnin Akira and Satoru join a group of outcasts on a dangerous mission. They become entangled in the struggle between Emperor and Shōgun, and their journey brings them into contact with gods and yōkai. Both men must also confront personal demons.

Another central figure is a boy with immense, uncontrollable powers. According to the game's feature description, Tokugawa's spymaster recruits Akira and Satoru to protect him. The group grows as the adventure unfolds, with each character bringing a personal history and motivation to the mission.

Player decisions can shape relationships. Choices may create bonds or break friendships. They can also repair family ties. The announcement gives no number of story branches and does not say how far those choices change the plot, leaving the scale of their consequences unclear.

Turn-based battles and a firm date

Shadow of the Road is a turn-based tactical RPG set in an alternate Japan during the Boshin War. Game*Spark describes a world drawing on Japanese mythology and magic. Steampunk technology also shapes the setting.

Game*Spark says players assemble a team of characters with distinct traits to fight yōkai and mechanised opponents. Each team member has distinct abilities. Personal goals can affect encounters, and relationships matter too. Players take the role of a strategist, selecting characters with varied skills and directing them through battles. Those are the announced ingredients; the trailer does not show enough to judge their depth or how they work together from one turn to the next.

The release date has moved from 12 November 2026 to 10 March 2027. RPG Site reports that developer Another Angle Games and publisher Owlcat Games cited the need for more polish, including work on combat and progression.

The trailer itself does not specify a platform. IGN reports that the game is planned for PC via Steam and GOG. IGN also lists the Epic Games Store; console versions have not been confirmed. A demo is available on Steam, giving players a chance to try the game before launch. NGB has also covered a different team-combat format in its Marvel Rivals coverage. Shadow of the Road instead centres on turn-based tactics and a character-led journey.

The trailer sells the cast and samurai setting, but offers little evidence about the tactical systems. A useful demonstration would follow an encounter from the opening move through the enemy response, showing how positioning and character abilities affect the fight. Until then, the game's strategic depth remains unproven.

The developers plan to release additional trailers before launch. Virus also reports that they intend to share more information about the game's world.
