Screamer Patch Adds Player-Requested Features and Balance Changes

Milestone has released a new update for Screamer, introducing quality-of-life improvements, character balancing and bug fixes based on player feedback, with changes affecting both gameplay flow and competitive integrity

Milestone has rolled out a significant update for Screamer, its arcade racing title set in a dystopian, anime-inspired world. The patch, which follows the game's global launch in March, is designed to address player feedback by introducing a range of quality-of-life improvements, gameplay adjustments and technical fixes. The update is available now across all supported platforms.

Main Menu and Tutorial Access

One of the most notable changes is the revised game flow: Screamer now opens directly to the Main Menu, rather than automatically launching into The Tournament story mode. This adjustment, which also applies to the demo version, allows players to choose how they engage with the game from the outset, whether that means jumping straight into the story, practising mechanics, or exploring other modes. In addition, in-game tutorials can now be accessed from the pause menu in any mode, making it easier for players to revisit or learn key systems at their own pace.

Character Balancing and Gameplay Adjustments

The patch introduces targeted balance changes to several characters. Aisha's ability now recharges after 45 seconds, enabling multiple shield uses per race, and her SGU activation threshold has been raised from 268 km/h to 282.5 km/h. Frederick benefits from increased passive and active sync generation rates, while Fermi's maximum entropy has been raised by one. Akane receives a fix for an issue that previously allowed simultaneous activation of Strike and her Skill's Boost. These changes are intended to create fairer races and encourage experimentation with different characters and playstyles.

Technical Fixes and Platform Optimisations

Beyond gameplay, the update addresses several technical issues. Force feedback problems affecting certain steering wheel peripherals have been resolved, and players can now tweak these settings from the options menu. An exploit in Score Challenge mode, which allowed artificially high scores via the Pause button, has been fixed. On consoles, the patch delivers optimisations aimed at improving responsiveness during gameplay, though these changes do not affect the PC version.

Competitive Integrity and Leaderboard Action

Milestone has also taken steps to maintain the integrity of Screamer's competitive leaderboards. Following internal investigations, times achieved through cheating or unfair methods have been removed, and offenders have received warnings. This approach is consistent with broader industry efforts to ensure fair competition, as seen in other recent titles such as the narrative-driven Sweetheart, which was announced for multiple platforms and discussed in our coverage of Sweetheart's cross-platform plans.

According to the official patch notes, these changes are now live for all players. The update affects both the full release and the demo, with platform-specific optimisations targeting console performance. No changes to PC performance or requirements have been announced as part of this patch.

Quality-of-life improvements in live-service and post-launch games typically refer to changes that streamline the player experience, reduce friction, or address common pain points without fundamentally altering core mechanics. In Screamer's case, shifting the starting point to the Main Menu and enabling tutorial access from the pause menu are classic examples. Such updates are increasingly common as developers respond to player feedback and usage data, aiming to keep games accessible and competitive long after launch.
