Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that the next mainline God of War game starring Kratos will arrive after God of War Laufey, directly continuing the narrative established in the upcoming Faye-focused entry. Key details remain unannounced

Santa Monica Studio has officially revealed that the next major God of War title featuring Kratos will be released after God of War Laufey, with the new instalment set to build directly on the story introduced in the Faye-led chapter. The announcement was made during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, providing the first concrete indication of the franchise's narrative direction beyond the upcoming release.

Announcement at Comic-Con 2026

The confirmation came from Cory Barlog, head of creative at Santa Monica Studio, who addressed the future of the series during the event's dedicated panel. While God of War Laufey is scheduled for release on 16 February 2027, no release window, platform information, or official title has been disclosed for the subsequent Kratos-led entry. The studio emphasised that the next game will be closely connected to the events and world-building established in Laufey's story, but stopped short of providing further specifics.

According to reporting from IGN, the panel focused primarily on Laufey's role and the expansion of the God of War universe, with Barlog highlighting the intention to introduce unexpected characters and extend the established mythology. The studio reiterated its commitment to Kratos as a central figure, stating that his journey will continue in future games, but did not clarify the timeline or development status of the next mainline entry.

God of War Laufey Release and Franchise Context

God of War Laufey, which shifts the narrative focus to Faye, is now confirmed for release on 16 February 2027. The game's initial gameplay reveal, shown during PlayStation's State of Play in June, depicted Kratos and Atreus burning Faye's body, followed by Kratos assisting Faye during a brief imprisonment sequence. It remains unclear how extensively Kratos will feature in Laufey, as the timeline overlaps with the events of God of War Ragnarök.

Early public reaction to Laufey has been mixed, with some players praising the visual presentation and combat, while others have expressed reservations about the shift away from Kratos as the primary playable character. Santa Monica Studio has responded by reaffirming that Kratos will remain central to the franchise, with multiple stories planned for the character in future releases.

What Remains Unconfirmed

At present, there is no official information regarding the platforms targeted for the next Kratos-led God of War, nor any details about its setting, gameplay structure, or release timing. The studio has not confirmed whether the game will launch on PlayStation 5, a future PlayStation console, or additional platforms. No footage, screenshots, or technical specifications have been released, and the project's development status has not been detailed beyond the narrative connection to Laufey.

In addition to the mainline series, Santa Monica Studio has announced a remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy, which will see Kratos return as the protagonist. This remake is reportedly in early development, with no release date or platform information currently available.

When a studio announces a new game in a long-running series, it is common for only limited details to be shared at first. Developers often confirm narrative direction or character focus before revealing gameplay, technical features, or platform specifics. This approach allows the team to manage expectations and adapt to changes in development, especially when multiple projects are in progress or when a major release is still months or years away from launch.
