Hello Sunshine Turns Shade Into a Survival System

Megabit and Red Thread Games have shown a new Hello Sunshine trailer featuring its giant robot companion and a survival loop built around shade by day and warmth at night. The game is planned for PC in 2027.

The robot's shadow is not scenery in Hello Sunshine. It marks the line between life and death. Megabit and Norwegian developer Red Thread Games have unveiled a new trailer showing the player scavenging a scorched wasteland with help from a towering mechanical guardian. The robot offers shade, protection and a growing sense of connection.

A robot between life and death

The trailer appeared during the PC Gaming Show: Tokyo Direct on September 20, 2026. It focuses on the world left behind by Sunshine. The 90-minute presentation featured more than 35 games and over 10 world premieres, according to PC Gamer.

Crumbling settlements, downed war machines and abandoned corporate infrastructure fill the setting. It is a survival mystery where moving through the world comes with a direct cost.

During the day, the player must stay beneath the robot's shadow. Step outside that cover and the heat will eventually kill her. Traveling farther can lead to better rewards. The basic risk is clear: exploration only works while the machine keeps the sun away.

Night brings a different threat. Once the robot recharges at a Sunshine Service Station, the wasteland turns bitterly cold. The player must stay close for warmth while making camp, cooking food, crafting equipment, repairing the robot and deciding whether strangers are safe to approach.

Shade is the core mechanic

Hello Sunshine ties its survival systems to the robot instead of treating it as a simple escort. The machine protects the player from the heat. It can also help her find hidden areas, lift her over obstacles, shield her from danger and fight hostile war machines.

PC Gamer's roundup of the Tokyo Direct presentation describes the footage as a story trailer that explores the relationship between Nomad and the giant robot. That supports the idea that the bond between the two characters is central to the game, rather than a side feature attached to the survival loop.

The relationship begins with little acknowledgement from the colossus. The trailer then moves toward a more personal moment. The robot becomes attentive to its human charge and eventually lifts her into its mechanical palm beneath the night sky.

The scene shows that their relationship has changed. It does not establish how broad the interaction system will be across the full game.

Players will be able to experience the journey alone or in co-op. The game was also shown at Tokyo Game Show on September 19, 2026. Coverage of the Norwegian Games booth identified it as a Red Thread Games and Megabit Publishing project and mentioned cooperative play.

Red Thread has tied progression to practical maintenance. Salvaged parts can repair and upgrade the robot. The player can improve her own gear and tools as well.

Scavenging the corporate ruins

Resources come from supply drops, storage units, downed war machines, shops and deserted settlements. At night, a Sunshine Recycler turns collected loot into base components for crafting gear, tools and weapons.

Each expedition has a clear shape. The player goes out for valuable salvage, returns before exposure becomes fatal and uses the night to prepare for another trip.

The trailer does not provide a precise release date. Red Thread Games and Megabit have positioned Hello Sunshine for release in 2027, with the PC version planned for Steam.

The SteamDB listing connected to the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct event marked the game as "Soon". That confirms a launch day had not been announced. The announcement also does not confirm pricing, editions or system requirements.

That matters because the footage is promotional trailer material, not an independent test of a review build. It shows the heat-and-cold survival premise, the relationship with the robot and the scavenging loop. It provides no measured performance data, resolution targets or evidence about how the finished PC version will run.

The game's mystery adds another layer to the survival structure. Sunshine promised humanity a brighter future before leaving automated war systems behind in a ruined world.

The player's unanswered objectives include identifying the Final Employee, reaching a white tower and discovering what happens when the last machine remembers her name.

What players know so far

The confirmed information is limited. Megabit is publishing Hello Sunshine, Red Thread Games is developing it, and the game is planned for release on PC via Steam in 2027. It will support solo and co-op play.

The new trailer shows a scorched world where shade protects against lethal daytime heat. Staying near the robot provides warmth after dark. Independent Japanese coverage from Den Fami Nico Gamer also identifies 2027 and Steam as the announced release plan.

The trailer does not answer how co-op divides control of the robot, how large the wasteland is, how many upgrades are available or whether the mystery branches according to player choices. It also does not establish final technical performance.

Those gaps are normal for an upcoming game. They also limit what the trailer can prove. For now, it shows the core concept and an early set of features.

Red Thread's previous work includes Dreamfall Chapters, Draugen and Dustborn. Megabit's announced publishing slate also includes Lou's Lagoon, Verdant and Pathfinder: Abomination Vaults.

That background places Hello Sunshine within a publisher and studio portfolio built around distinctive narrative-led projects rather than a conventional military survival formula.

Hello Sunshine has a stronger hook than its cheerful name suggests. The robot is both companion and infrastructure. The trailer makes that relationship the game's clearest point of difference and gives the survival rules a physical logic.

Until Red Thread shares more about the build and release plan, the safest reading is a sharply defined PC prospect. Its central mechanic already has teeth, but a breakthrough is not guaranteed.

Shade here is a gameplay resource, not just a visual effect. A shadowed area determines whether the player can travel safely during the day. The robot's location also shapes routes and risk.

Systems like these can make exploration meaningful because survival depends on position and timing. The trailer cannot show how consistently they work during extended play. For now, Hello Sunshine has demonstrated a coherent survival premise and a promising companion framework without proving final quality.
