Genshin Impact Version 7.1 brings Snezhnaya conflict and new characters

Genshin Impact Version 7.1 launches 23 September with a high-stakes Snezhnaya showdown, two new 5-star characters, a returning festival, and the most generous anniversary rewards yet

Genshin Impact is about to enter one of its most consequential chapters as Version 7.1, titled "A Rekviem for the Underworld," arrives on 23 September 2026. According to official statements from HoYoverse, this update is not only a major narrative milestone but also marks the beginning of the game's sixth anniversary celebrations, which culminate on 28 September 2026. The update sets the stage for a direct confrontation in Snezhnaya, where the Ruler of Death, Ronova, threatens to upend the balance of power. For the first time, players will face the Tsaritsa herself and witness the culmination of her years-long campaign to collect the Gnoses, with the fate of the nation and its people hanging in the balance.

Snezhnaya's Crisis and the Ruler of Death

The core of Version 7.1 is a new Archon Quest that pushes Snezhnaya to the brink. Ronova, wielding the authority of death, has imposed severe obstacles on the nation's resistance against the Heavenly Principles. The Tsaritsa's true strategy is finally exposed, and the arrival of Rhinedottir, the Ruler of Life, injects further uncertainty into an already volatile situation. Players will join the front lines in a climactic battle against Ronova, who also debuts as a Weekly Boss encounter. HoYoverse confirms that completing the Archon Quest will grant 620 Primogems, and new assignments from the Tsaritsa's Confidential Secretary will offer additional insight into Snezhnaya's leadership and governance. This focus on the Snezhnaya arc and the evolving conflict with the Tsaritsa is highlighted in multiple recap materials and official summaries.

Two new 5-star characters, Vesna and Vodyanitsa, headline the update. Vesna, the youngest Commander in Druzhna history, is a 5-star Anemo Sword user who can convert Cryo Swirl reactions into the new Stellar Swirl mechanic. Her combat abilities revolve around summoning Spirit Blades and managing "Sword Essence" for powerful attacks and exploration advantages, including flight. Vodyanitsa, the Prima Donna of Snezhnograd's Korolevskiy Troupe, is a 5-star Hydro Catalyst user who transforms into her Water Imp form to heal, debuff enemies, and boost team damage. Both characters will be available in the first phase of Event Wishes, with Skirk and Escoffier returning in the second phase. The debut of Vesna and Vodyanitsa as new 5-star characters is confirmed by several overview publications based on official HoYoverse special program materials, as reported by ScreenRant.

Moonchase Festival and Seasonal Events

After a five-year absence, the Moonchase Festival returns to Liyue, transforming Yilong Wharf into a festival ground layered with mystery. Players can expect three new mini-games inspired by Liyue thaumaturges, with rewards including a new 4-star Sword. The festival narrative hints at unresolved secrets involving Zhongli and Zibai, adding a layer of intrigue to the celebrations.

Elsewhere, Snezhnaya hosts a seasonal snowball event for local children, while Natlan introduces a tournament prediction event where players forecast the outcomes of 16 teams across several days. Each event offers a range of rewards, from cosmetics to in-game resources. Miliastra Wonderland also receives an autumn-themed lobby update, a free cosmetic set, and expanded editor tools supporting client-side scripting and collaborative editing, broadening the creative options for players.

Anniversary Rewards and Platform Details

Version 7.1 marks Genshin Impact's sixth anniversary with the most generous reward structure to date. According to official HoYoverse news, players who complete the new Archon Quest can select one event-exclusive 5-star character for free from a curated lineup at any point during the version, alongside a standard 5-star character, 1,600 Primogems, 10 Intertwined Fates, and additional anniversary bonuses. The update launches simultaneously across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Android, and iOS, as confirmed by independent reports referencing HoYoverse data. Cross-progression and Co-Op support are maintained across all platforms, ensuring a seamless experience for all players. The game retains a T for Teen ESRB rating on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Google Play, and a 12+ rating on iOS.

HoYoverse continues to expand Genshin Impact's world and technical capabilities, with Snezhnaya now fully open for exploration since Version 7.0. The update's timing places it alongside other major live-service releases, as reported earlier, intensifying competition for player attention during a crowded autumn schedule.

What Remains Uncertain

While the update's headline features and rewards are confirmed, several details remain untested. The practical impact of the new Stellar Swirl mechanic, the balance of the new characters, and the difficulty of the Ronova boss fight will only become clear after launch. HoYoverse has not yet released independent gameplay footage of the new Archon Quest or the festival mini-games, and no third-party technical analysis is available for performance or stability on any platform. As with previous major updates, the real test will come when the patch is live and players can verify the claims against actual gameplay conditions.

Cross-progression is a system that allows players to carry their progress, unlocked characters, and inventory across multiple platforms using a single account. In Genshin Impact, this means that a player can start their adventure on PlayStation, continue on PC or mobile, and return to console without losing any progress. This feature is especially valuable for live-service games with frequent updates, as it removes barriers between platforms and lets players participate in new content and events wherever they choose to play. However, cross-progression depends on account linking and may be subject to platform-specific restrictions or regional limitations.

According to HoYoverse and corroborated by All Things How and ScreenRant, Version 7.1 is positioned as a landmark update, both for its narrative significance and for the scale of its anniversary rewards and cross-platform rollout.
