Dangerous Diver launches on Steam with physics-based arcade gameplay

Shaggy Mane Studios has released Dangerous Diver on Steam, offering a physics-driven arcade challenge with a story mode, five tournament locations and unlockable content for PC players

Dangerous Diver, the latest title from Irish indie developer Shaggy Mane Studios, is now available for PC players via Steam. The game introduces players to Danton Dangereux, a diver reluctantly following in the footsteps of his late father, Darcel Dangereux, whose ghost lingers until Danton completes a series of forbidden dives. Built around physics-based mechanics, Dangerous Diver challenges players to master timing and trajectory while contending with environmental hazards and unpredictable wildlife.

Gameplay and Features

At its core, Dangerous Diver is a skill-driven arcade experience inspired by classic trajectory games. Players must execute precise dives across five handcrafted tournament locations, each presenting unique obstacles and escalating difficulty. The game's structure encourages repeated attempts, with a three-star scoring system rewarding accuracy and mastery. Humorous animated cutscenes and a cast of quirky characters add narrative flavour, while unlockable costumes and hidden secrets offer replay value beyond the main campaign.

Development Journey

Dangerous Diver's development began as a small mobile project among friends, but over time the team narrowed to just two core members: artist, musician and designer Alan Donnelly, and programmer Colm Kelly. The project was first showcased at Pocket Gamer Connects San Francisco in 2018, where it attracted publisher interest and underwent nearly a year of further development before a publishing deal fell through. After a period on hold, Alan Donnelly returned to expand the game into a larger PC release, building on the original programming foundation. The final version reflects years of part-time development alongside other commitments.

Release Details and Platform Context

Dangerous Diver is available now on Steam for Windows PC. The release includes five tournament locations, five legendary forbidden dives, a three-star scoring system, unlockable costumes, and an original soundtrack. The game's launch trailer is available on YouTube, and further details can be found on the official Shaggy Mane Studios website. For those interested in other recent indie releases on Steam, a playable demo for The House Dreams Along With Them was also made available for PC and Steam Deck, offering a different take on physics-driven gameplay and narrative structure-see the coverage here.

Shaggy Mane Studios, based in Wexford, Ireland, developed Dangerous Diver as a two-person team, combining physics-based gameplay with a distinctive sense of humour and character. Review keys are available on request for press and content creators.

Physics-based arcade games rely on simulated forces and motion to determine how characters and objects behave, rather than using fixed animations or scripted outcomes. This approach can make gameplay feel more dynamic and unpredictable, as player input and environmental factors interact in real time. Mastery often requires understanding how timing, angle and momentum affect each attempt, rewarding practice and experimentation over rote memorisation. In Dangerous Diver, this means every dive is shaped by both player skill and the underlying physics simulation, creating a gameplay loop that encourages repeated improvement.
