SWTOR Classes – Jedi Consular & Sith Inquisitor

Inquisitive you are, I see.

With Star Wars: The Old Republic early access starting today we have another class preview for you to perhaps help you decide which class to roll with when you enter BioWare’s Star Wars creation.

Today we are looking at two force wielders in the form of the Jedi Consular and Sith Inquisitor. Perhaps known as the other class that wields a lightsaber, the Sith Inquisitor and Jedi Consular may not be as popular as the Sith Warrior and Jedi Knight, but they are certainly powerful and fun to play in their own right.

From a story point of view both classes seek the force, the Inquisitor wishes to learn its secrets to gain power and dominate others whilst the Consular is its protector. The Consular seeks a greater understanding of the force and with it, hopes to find peace and prosperity.

The Consular and Inquisitor can often be mistaken as a pure caster class as they wear light armour which resembles a casters robes. They also gain many caster like spells early on but these are limited to close range and are well supplemented with melee strikes. The style of play in the early levels is certainly mixed and does a good job of giving new players a taste of what’s to come.

Both classes share a resource mechanic with no name change or mirror business at play. Instead they simply both use force, a resource which is very similar to mana, a mechanic found in almost every single MMO we have played. Mana starts off high and slowly dwindles as abilities are used, the resource will slowly regenerate over time and certain abilities will enable even faster regen.

The advanced class choice is certianly a contrasting one. On one hand you can choose the path of the Sage or Sorcerer, a hybrid healer/long range damage class that lives up to the caster look. On the other you may choose the Shadow or Assassin, a stealthy melee class that strikes from the shadows as a damage dealer or defends upfront as a force wielding tank.

Sorcery, Sage, Mage?

The Sorcerer and Sage, these guys are the main caster of SWTOR and offer the chance for players to both heal and deal damage with long range spells. The Sorcerer is perhaps the cooler of the two with a number of purple lightning spells which light up the screen. The Sage looks all-together more like a caring healer, but don’t let looks deceive you, these guys are a mirror and have identical abilities when it comes down to pure statistics.

Strike from the shadows

The Jedi Shadow is perhaps an odd name for a class, Sith Assassin is perhaps more stereotypical of what this class can do. The damage dealer option is very much similar to stealth combatants found in other MMORPGs, but things are shaken up when roles are switched to the tanking side of things. Tanks usually don heavy armour to soak up the damage, Assassins instead conjure the force to create defensive shields and reflective barriers. If you are looking for a tanking class with a difference, then the Sith Assassin or Jedi Shadow may be for you.
