Sneak Peek – PlayStation Vita

Vita unboxed!

The PlayStation Vita is not out in North America and Europe until February, but Adrian Purser, our resident import fanatic, managed to get one over from Japan, and kindly filmed a sneak peek at Sony’s latest handheld for your viewing pleasure.

Adrian unleashes the PlayStation Vita from its packaging, and shows you guys what to expect inside the box if you decide to purchase the handheld in February. He also fires up the sexy looking machine for the first time, just to make sure it works!

Take a look at the video below, and if you have any questions for Adrian, be sure to get them in via the comments section below.

    Awesome!

    First question I have is what made you want to import the machine? Intrigued, as I’m struggling to find a reason myself.

    Superb vid, Adrian!.

    What’s the battery life like on the Vita?

    This machine is a BEAST!
    Looks gorgeous, love the flushed out design and the screen is just jaw-dropping madness.
    Looking forward to seeing the official UK edition with all the minor tweaks and when will be available for us in the coming month :)

    I have to be honest, this handheld is probably the least excited I’ve ever been about trying a new console. I think my problem with the playstation handheld is it’s always a watered down version of it’s big brother home console. I think handheld consoles need to be a console in their own right and this is why the 3DS is great as it’s not a mini Wii, it’s a console in it’s own right.

    Although I’ll almost definitely be picking one up I’d have to agree with Spike regarding the ‘watered down’ feeling in general of Sony’s hand-helds. It’ll be interesting to see if developers really take all the different touch pads into game design. The possibilities are mind boggling, but whether they choose to really delve into that aspect or just hammer out poorer versions of console counter parts remains to be seen in the long run.

    At the end of the day, great games sell consoles whether it’s ahnd held or not I guess. Launch is very important.

    @Kitana
    I’d been hearing lots of interesting discussion about the system, and knew I definitely wanted one. Although physical media is supposedly region-free, I still like owning original Japanese hardware, and with Wipeout and Gravity Daze both being available before the UK launch, it was far too tempting for me to resist!

    @Gari
    Not been able to test it too much, but it seems to be similar to that of the 3DS – so not stellar! There’s a big focus on being online too – if you’re out and about it will prompt to connect to Wifi at any opportunity, so flight mode is recommended to keep you free from constant nagging & draining battery.

    @Rage06
    I hope there aren’t any tweaks involved in the UK edition! I can imagine Sony have had their hands full as it is preparing for all of the different SIM cards it will potentially be taking throughout the EU… Would agree with you about the screen though, and the hardware in general – it has a nice weight and build quality, has decent inputs, and looks the business.

    @Spike
    I do think that it’s a shame a lot of the launch titles are existing franchises, but this is sadly a bit of a given. The hardware itself is very impressive though, and there’s a lot of learnings from both Nintendo and also from smartphones in there – it’s a very slick device to play with! Don’t forget either, whilst the 3DS is starting to pick up momentum now, it was also cursed with an even more uninspiring launch line-up!

    @Nick
    I’m in agreement that there’s no interesting use for the Vita’s touchscreens yet – Uncharted in particular seems to have fallen foul of using it for using it’s sake, but I’m sure developers will find less obtuse ways of bringing into titles soon. Let’s not forget the tilt controls either!
