Microsoft Creative Director Hints At Always-On Next-Gen Xbox

An interesting piece of news this morning is the apparent confirmation of the ever-expanding rumour that Microsoft’s next generation Xbox will require an internet connection to function.

A twitter post from Adam Orth, creative director Microsoft Studios, seemed to be aimed squarely at the rumours that the next Xbox will require an “always-on” connection. The initial post read: “Sorry, I don’t get the drama around having an “always on” console. Every device now is “always on”. That’s the world we live in. #dealwithit” Orth’s twitter account has now been made private, but the fallout from this could be very damaging to Microsoft. Orth followed the post up with a series of analogies such as “Sometimes the electricity goes out. I will not purchase a vacuum cleaner” and “The mobile reception in the area I live in is spotty and unreliable. I will not buy a mobile phone”. He then had a back-and-forth with Manveer Heir of Bioware, which is being reported elsewhere as a “spat”, but the pair were quick to clarify that they are good friends and this was merely “banter”.

Posters on NeoGAF also found an interesting quote from a developer who is currently working on an “unannounced” project, rumoured to be a next-gen title, on a gaming forum that stated “Given that legally I cannot confirm or deny if this is true, nor can I comment on rumor or speculation, all I can say is be sure to pay your ISP bills ;)”

Given that Microsoft have yet to formally announce the console, and with multiple other sources all suggesting that the next gen Xbox will require an internet connection to even launch games, does this influence your prospective next gen purchase? Let us know in the comments
