HTC VIVE PRO HMD @ CES
During their CES2018 show HTC VIVE announced the introduction of two new pieces of hardware to their VR line-up; the Vive Pro and Vive Wireless Adapter.
The Vive Pro is a new Head Mounted Display built for VR enthusiasts who want the best of the best when it comes to VR fidelity. The Vive Pro includes two OLED displays at a combined 2880×1600 resolution, putting it at a 78% increased res over the current Vive HMD.
With greater resolution comes a greater all-around experience as the improved clarity not only turns it up a notch for immersion but text and graphics will look sharper as a result. The Vive Pro isn’t all about the OLED displays, though. It also boasts an integrated high-performance set of headphones which are said to offer a heightened presence and overall richer sound with its built-in amplifier. Comfort is also key with the Vive Pro. The newly enhanced headstrap includes a size dial for easy adjustment and decreases weight on the front of the headset.
“There’s a clear need in the VR market for a premium VR experience with high resolution display, integrated audio and the best components available today in a headset,” said Daniel O’Brien, GM U.S., VIVE. “Vive Pro offers an immediate upgrade for both VR enthusiasts and enterprises that want to utilise the best VR experience.”
Vive Wireless Adapter
The Vive Wireless Adapter was also unveiled during CES. Why’s this exciting? It’s the first of its kind coming to the VR market and it means we’ll finally get a true wireless VR experience.
The wireless adapter features Intel’s WiGig technology running on the interference-free 60Ghz band. This ultimately means latency will be at an all-time low and performance will be at an all-time high. The wireless adapter will be available to purchase in Q3 of this year, worldwide.
“Wireless VR has been on nearly every VR user’s wishlist since the technology was unveiled,” said Frank Soqui, General Manager Virtual Reality Group at Intel Corporation. “By collaborating with HTC to commercialise Intel’s WiGig technology, we will guarantee that wireless VR meets the most discerning quality bar for home users and business VR customers.”
